A Secretaria de Estado do Meio Ambiente e Desen… Show more

“…This stems from the term ''agrarian area'' (área fundiária) used to describe the perception of many small farmers settled along roadsides that they have a right to claim unoccupied land behind their properties. This perception has no legal basis, but it does influence behavior (Fearnside et al, 2009a). The areas (ha) of ''AFS'' and of ''forest outside of the AFS'' are updated in each iteration, in accord with the increment in roads and deforestation in the model.…”

“…"Leakage" refers to effects a mitigation project provokes outside of its boundaries that cancel out all or part of the climatic benefits of the project itself, for example if people who would have deforested in a protected areas simply move somewhere else in the forest and continue clearing. Existing models for regional deforestation (e.g., Soares-Filho et al, 2006) do not yet have this capability, but progress has been made towards enhancing these models to simulate the effects of individual decisions (Fearnside et al, 2009). This opens the possibility of much more effective proposals for capturing carbon credit through avoided deforestation, as well as providing a tool for improved decision-making on infrastructure.…”
