Show more

“…Therefore, the multidecadalscale variability of the residual terms of the moisture and heat budgets over TSAM features both a heat sink (source) and a moisture source (sink) to the atmosphere, indicative of a weakening (strengthening) of the SAMS before (after) the middle of the 1970s. This result is consistent with previous findings regarding SAMS multidecadal variability as shown by long-term trend of the precipitation or outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) time series (Chu et al 1994;Chen et al 2001;Marengo 2004) or by the multidecadal variations of the tropical modes for OLR and circulation variables (Chelliah and Bell 2004;Garcia and Kayano 2009b). Using precipitation or OLR data, positive precipitation trend was documented over almost all the Amazon basin for the 1960-2000 period (Chen et al 2001) and for the 1974-1990 period (Chu et al 1994) and over southern Amazon for the 1950-1998 period (Marengo 2004).…”

“…These conditions are consistent with a heat sink (source) and moisture source (sink) (Figs. 2 and 3), with the results confirming previous findings regarding SAMS weakening (strengthening) before (after) 1976 regarding the precipitation or OLR long-term trends over Amazon areas (Chu et al 1994;Chen et al 2001;Marengo 2004) or the multidecadal tropical climate variability modes (Chelliah and Bell 2004;Garcia and Kayano 2009b). However, the present data provide an improved view of the thermodynamic and atmospheric circulation characteristics associated with the residual terms of the heat and moisture budgets in the SAMS area.…”
