Show more

“…Second, some researchers have called for further research on natural resource-based supply chains in Latin America (e.g., Altenburg and Meyer-Stamer, 1999). The upstream offshore oil and gas is an extreme case of natural resourcebased supply chain that has experienced an impressive growth and success in terms of number of firms, jobs, and total production in the last decades (Moura et al, 2010;Lima and Silva, 2012).…”

“…Second, it is important to consider the fact that most of the Brazilian refineries were configured to process light oil since they were installed before the discoveries in the Campos basin, which occurred mainly between the 1980s and 1990s. As in this cluster, there is the concentration of heavy oil; in the old oil refineries, Petrobras has mixed the oil produced in the Brazilian reservoirs with imported oil, lighter and of a superior quality (Lima and Silva, 2012). Finally, from the 2000s onward, there was a significant increase in the Brazilian fleet of vehicles, which represented an increase in the demand for oil products.…”

“…The Brazilian state-controlled oil company, Petrobras, was created in 1953 to monopolistically exploit oil reserves, refining and transport (distribution was open to private companies). Since then, Petrobras has established a consistent relationship with several universities in Brazil, reported in case studies that have focused on specific research-intensive institutions (Lima and Silva, 2012;Poletto et al, 2011;Suslick, 2007). Collaboration on R&D with different partners, including universities, was crucial for Petrobras to catch up from being an 'imitator' to becoming one of the 'frontier innovators' in oil industry (Dantas and Bell, 2011;Furtado and Freitas, 2000;Gielfi et al, 2013).…”
