: The Aedes aegypti is responsible for the transmission of arboviruses, which compromise public health. In the search for synthetic product alternatives, essential oils (OEs) have been highlighted by many researchers as natural insecticides. This systematic review (SR) was performed according to PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and had as it’s objective to evaluate studies addressing OEs with larvicidal properties against Ae. aegypti, through electronic database searches (Pubmed, Science Direct and Scielo), covering an overview of the plant sources OEs, which plant parts were used, the extraction methods, analytical techniques, major and/or secondary constituents with greater percentages, as well as the LC50s responsible for larval mortality. Following study analysis, plants distributed across 32 families, 90 genera and 175 species were identified. The Lamiaceae, Myrtaceae, Piperaceae, Asteraceae, Rutaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Lauraceae families obtained the highest number of species with toxic properties against larvae from this vector. Practically all plant parts were found to be used for OE extraction. Hydrodistillation and steam distillation were the main extraction methods identified, with GC-MS/GC-FID representing the main analytical techniques used to reveal their chemical composition, especially of terpene compounds. In this context, OEs are promising alternatives for the investigation of natural, ecologically correct and biodegradable insecticides with the potential to be used in Ae. aegypti control programs.

The chapter is a review on ethno-botanical studies on medicinal trees of the biotype Sertão, which comprises 80% areal of Pernambuco, Brazil. Since 1990, interest for natural remedies has grown rapidly. The main reason is the development of antibiotic resistance. Another fact driving this interest is the cost for developing secure, active, non-harming medicines by working through organic syntheses. The scope of this review is to throw light on the huge treasure of public knowledge in applying herbs, trees, and shrubs for the cure of many diseases. The consciousness of what nature can deliver practically free of costs and labor goes back for generations, transmitted within the tribes and between neighbors. Activities, toxicology, side-effects are all empirically gained wisdom. The Sertão has tropical climate and a diversified flora. The review is on trees containing valuable second metabolites which have physiological curing activity. This review may attract interest for inter-college collaboration within the scope of drug design guided by ethno-knowledge.

Na madeira estão presentes inúmeras substâncias sintetizadas pela árvore como defensivos à estímulos ambientais. Tais substâncias podem ser fonte potencial de princípios ativos, incluindo os de ação larvicida contra o mosquito Aedes aegypti. A partir de revisão de literatura, foram encontrados 23 trabalhos científicos sobre a atividade larvicida de compostos presentes na madeira. Os estudos contemplaram a análise de 66 espécies vegetais pertencentes a 23 famílias botânicas. Cerca de 30% das espécies estudadas foram consideradas ativas. A espécie que apresentou o material bruto mais ativo foi Callitris glaucophylla, cujo óleo essencial apresentou CL50 = 0,69 ppm. Foram identificadas 23 moléculas potencialmente ativas, sendo o melhor resultado obtido pela tectoquinona isolada do extrato metanólico de Cryptomeria japonica, com CL50 = 3,3 ppm. Observou-se que a madeira pode ser fonte de larvicidas naturais com ação similar ao larvicida sintético organofosforado temefós, cujo valor de CL50 encontrado na literatura variou entre 2,3 a 9,4 ppm. Dentre as vantagens do uso de larvicidas de origem natural, destaca-se a maior biodegradabilidade e a menor toxicidade aos organismos não alvos quando comparados aos sintéticos, além da contribuição para o enfrentamento do problema da resistência dos insetos.
