The presence of extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) between leaflets is an usual feature in Inga edulis (Vell.) Mart. (Leguminosae). Extrafloral nectaries are secretory structures involved in production of nectar and which serve in the protection of plants against herbivores through association with ants. This study aimed to characterize the EFNs of I. edulis at different developmental stages and describe their morphology, histochemistry and ultrastructure. Leaf fragments, containing secretory structures, were processed according to standard methods for light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The EFNs were classified into three stages based on morphology: pre‐secretory, secretory and post‐secretory. The pre‐secretory stage occurs in young leaves, whereas secretory and post‐secretory stages occur in developed and senescent leaves, respectively. The EFNs possess a concave surface and a central cleft in which nectar is accumulated and which was not observed in pre‐secretory EFNs. Histochemical tests identified the presence of sugars, proteins, phenolic compounds, mucilage and lipids at all developmental stages of the EFNs. Calcium crystals were identified in all tissues and stages of the EFNs. The secretory cells of the EFNs exhibit a granular cytoplasm, small vacuoles, prominent nuclei, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Post‐secretory stage EFNs exhibited intense cytoplasmic degradation and the presence of microorganisms. The performance of EFNs of I. edulis appear to follow the leaf development.

Disturbance Winners or Losers? Plants Bearing Extrafloral Nectaries in Brazilian Caatinga

Plants bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) often have traits typical of pioneer species, and may be expected to proliferate in disturbed habitats. However, a negative effect of disturbance on visitation by attendant ants could prevent EFN‐bearing plants from acting as disturbance winners. Here, we address the effects of chronic anthropogenic disturbance on the abundance of EFN‐bearing plants and their interactions with attendant ants in Caatinga vegetation of northeastern Brazil. We recorded the abundance of EFN‐bearing plants, proportion of plants visited by ants and composition of ant attendant species at 24 sites varying in levels of disturbance. EFN‐bearing plants as a whole did not behave as a disturbance winner group. The responses of the 13 species to increasing disturbance were highly variable, with three species declining in abundance (loser species). The richness of ant species attending EFNs did not vary with disturbance, but species composition did. The overall proportion of EFN‐bearing plants attended by ants per 5‐min period was not affected by disturbance. However, for the three loser species, attendance decreased from about 50 percent with low and moderate disturbance to half that with very high disturbance. We hypothesize that disturbed sites are more stressful for loser species compared with other EFN‐bearing plants, with physiological stress resulting in lower production of EFN secretions and reduced attraction of ants. This would make such species double losers, with physiological stress at disturbed sites not only directly influencing their performance but also indirectly affecting it through the disruption of a key mutualism.

ResumoMimoseae, uma das tribos do clado Mimosoide -Leguminosae, possui 41 gêneros e cerca de 860 espécies. No Brasil, está representada por 16 gêneros e 614 espécies. Dada relevância do grupo para a flora brasileira e para a Mata Atlântica, este trabalho apresenta o estudo florístico dos gêneros Anadenanthera, Leucaena, Neptunia, Parapiptadenia, Parkia, Piptadenia, Plathymenia, Pseudopiptadenia AbstractTribe Mimoseae (Mimosoid clade -Leguminosae) has 41 genera and about 860 species, of which, 16 genera and 614 species are recorded in Brazil. As a very representative group from Brazilian flora and from Atlantic Rainforest, this paper aims to provide the floristic and taxonomic treatment for genera Anadenanthera, Leucaena, Neptunia, Parapiptadenia, Parkia, Piptadenia, Plathymenia, Pseudopiptadenia, and Stryphnodendron from Espírito Santo state (ES). Fieldwork was performed from April 2014 to July 2015 and vouchers housed at herbaria were examined. A total of 24 taxa (22 species and two varieties) were found in the state. Piptadenia (six spp.), Pseudopiptadenia (six spp.), Stryphnodendron (three spp.), and Anadenanthera (two spp.) are the richest genera amongst analyzed. Leucaena, Neptunia, Parapiptadenia, Parkia, and Plathymenia were represented by only one species each. Compared to the previously known for ES, results increased two genera and nine taxa (specific and infraspecific), as follow: Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, A. colubrina var. colubrina, A. peregrina var. peregrina, Neptunia plena, Piptadenia santosii, Pseudopiptadenia bahiana, P. psilostachya, Stryphnodendron polyphyllum, and S. pulcherrimum. Identification keys, descriptions, taxonomic comments, illustrations, and geographic distribution maps are provided.
