Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) mediating ecologically important ant–plant protection mutualisms are especially common and unusually diverse in the Leguminosae. We present the first comprehensively curated list of legume genera with EFNs, detailing and illustrating their systematic and phylogenetic distributions, locations on the plant, morphology and anatomy, on the basis of a unified classification of EFN categories and a time-calibrated phylogeny, incorporating 710 of the 768 genera. This new synthesis, the first since Mckey (1989)’s seminal paper, increases the number of genera with EFNs to 153 (20% of legumes), distributed across subfamilies Cercidoideae (1), Detarioideae (19), Caesalpinioideae (87) and Papilionoideae (46). EFNs occur at nine locations, and are most prevalent on vegetative plant parts, especially leaves (74%) and inflorescence axes (26%). Four main categories (with eight subcategories) are recognised and include the following: formless, trichomatic (exposed, hollow), parenchymatic (embedded, pit, flat, elevated) and abscission zone EFNs (non-differentiated, swollen scars). Phylogenetic reconstruction of EFNs suggests independent evolutionary trajectories of different EFN types, with elevated EFNs restricted almost exclusively to Caesalpinioideae (where they underwent spectacular morphological disparification), flat EFNs in Detarioideae, swollen scar EFNs in Papilionoideae, and Cercidoideae is the only subfamily bearing intrastipular EFNs. We discuss the complex evolutionary history of EFNs and highlight future research directions.

RESUMO -Nectários são comuns dentre as Leguminosae, estando freqüentemente localizados nas folhas. Objetivou-se caracterizar anatomicamente o caule, a folha e o nectário extrafloral de Chamaecrista trichopoda, bem como investigar a natureza química do secretado do nectário dessa espécie. As amostras foram submetidas a testes histoquímicos e técnicas usuais em anatomia vegetal, sendo analisadas ao microscópio de luz e eletrônico de varredura. Os folíolos são anfiestomáticos e dorsiventrais, apresentando feixes vasculares colaterais com fibras associadas. Nas células da bainha do feixe é comum a ocorrência de monocristais. Tricomas tectores unisseriados e multicelulares ocorrem na lâmina foliar e no caule. O caule apresenta epiderme unisseriada, com três a quatro camadas de colênquima subepidérmico, seguido internamente por duas a três camadas de colênquima. Na camada mais interna do córtex destacam-se idioblastos cristalíferos contendo monocristais, o feixe vascular é delimitado por fibras e a medula é parenquimática. As características anatômicas foliares e caulinares corroboram os dados existentes para a subfamília Caesalpinioideae. O nectário situa-se na parte adaxial do pecíolo e apresenta coloração alaranjada, com o ápice formando uma concavidade, bordas levemente abauladas e pedúnculo com cerca de 1 mm de altura. É comum a ocorrência de pequenas aberturas na superfície do nectário e hifas fúngicas na fase pós-secretora. Anatomicamente, confirmou-se uma estrutura semelhante à de um nectário, o qual é vascularizado por floema e xilema; o parênquima nectarífero ocorre abaixo da epiderme que apresenta cutícula espessa. Caracteres anatômicos do nectário podem auxiliar na taxonomia do gênero. As análises histoquímicas evidenciaram o acúmulo de tanino nas células do parênquima nectarífero, que pode funcionar como uma proteção à herbivoria. Observou-se a presença de poros na superfície do nectário, que podem ser sítios preferenciais de eliminação do néctar. Entretanto, futuras análises ao microscópio eletrônico de transmissão serão fundamentais para elucidar o processo de eliminação do néctar.Palavras-chave: anatomia vegetal, Leguminosae, nectário extrafloral. Cavitated secretory trichomes are characterized by a short or absent stalk that is connected to a secretory hollow head. They are rare structures in angiosperms; in Fabaceae, they have been recorded in only seven genera, including Bauhinia s.s. Because B. curvula and B. rufa exhibit glands that are responsible for attracting pollinators to flowers, this study aimed to test whether the cavitated secretory trichomes present in the flowers of these species have an attraction function. As leaf trichomes are commonly related to plant defence, comparative analyses of the morphology, ontogeny, ultrastructure and chemical profile of the secretory trichomes present in flowers and leaves were conducted. It was found that cavitated secretory trichomes are similar in their external morphology and development, regardless of the organ or species analysed. However, interspecific differences were found in the secretion process and chemical profile of the exudate. The differences found in the cavitated secretory trichomes between species indicate that they secrete distinct compounds, whereas the similarities found in these structures between vegetative and reproductive organs indicate that the cavitated trichomes have equivalent ecological functions within a species, probably in plant defence during organ development. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2016, 180, 104–122.
