First records of Zygnematales (Zygnematophyceae, Streptophyta) for the state of Bahia, Brazil

This study presents the first taxonomic inventory of the order Zygnematales in the Litoral Norte Environmentally Protected Area, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Fifty samples of planktonic and periphytic material were collected, from lotic and lentic environments, during the summer (January-March) and winter (June-August) of 2009. We identified 18 taxa distributed among five genera (Cylindrocystis, Mougeotia, Netrium, Spirogyra, and Spirotaenia). Of those 18 taxa, eight were new additions to the Brazilian desmid flora: Mougeotia calcarea; Mougeotia elegantula; Spirogyra gracilis; Cylindrocystis crassa var. elliptica; Cylindrocystis brebissonii var. minor; Cylindrocystis brebissonii var. turgida; Netrium digitus var. parvum; and Netrium oblongum var. oblongum. The geographical distributions of ten taxa were extended to include northeastern Brazil.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of river-dam axis and abiotic factors on the composition of Closteriaceae, Gonatozygaceae, Mesotaeniaceae and Peniaceae in a tropical reservoir. Methods: Water samples for physical, chemical and periphyton analysis were collected in April and August 2002 in different regions along the axis of the river-dam of Rosana Reservoir, River Basin Paranapanema. The substrates collected, always in the litoranea region, were petioles of Eichhornia azurea (Swartz) Kunth. To examine the relationship of abiotic variables with reservoir zones and between the floristic composition of desmids, we used principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Results: The results of the PCA explained 81.3% of the total variability in the first two axes. In the first axis, the variables of conductivity, water temperature and the pH were related to the sampling regions of April with higher values, while for the month of August, nitrate, total phosphorus and dissolved oxygen showed higher values. We identified 20 taxa, distributed in the genera Closterium (14), Gonatozygon (4), Netrium (1) and Penium (1). Spatially, the higher taxa were recorded in the lacustrine region for both collection periods. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) summarized 62.2% of total data variability of taxa in the first two axes, and in August, Closterium incurvum Brébisson, C. cornu Ehrenberg ex Ralfs and Gonatozygon monotaenium De Bary, were related to higher values of turbidity and nitrate to the lacustrine and intermediate regions. Conclusion: Thus, the formation of groups was due to the regions along the longitudinal axis, then the seasonal period, which must be related to the low current velocity, the higher values of temperature and the water transparency, especially in late summer.

-(Genus Lepocinclis (Euglenophyceae) along five years in the area of influence of the Southern Petrochemical Pole, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil). As part of an Euglenophytes survey carried out during 2002-2006 at three different sites of Bom Jardim Creek, 13 Lepocinclis taxa were identified at species and infraspecific level. Bom Jardim Creek is a right side affluent of Caí River, Municipality of Triunfo, State of Rio Grande do Sul, and has its almost entire 10.5 km length within the Southern Petrochemical Pole area. Local climate is subtropical. Samplings were carried out monthly both for biological and abiotic analyses. Among the taxa identified, Lepocinclis fusiformis (Carter) Lemmermann emend. Conrad, L. ovum (Ehrenberg) Lemmermann var. dimidio-minor Deflandre and Lepocinclis salina Fritsch var. salina were the broadest geographically distributed ones in the creek during all five years, due to their standing to a wide range of environmental conditions. Seasonal species richness variation was observed in all creek sampling sites, summer being significantly different from all other climatic seasons of the year.
