Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate gaps between knowledge on HIV/AIDS and sexual behavior among teenagers. The study used a cross-sectional design with a representative random sample of 1,158 teenagers (14 to 19 years of age) enrolled in nine public secondary schools and who answered validated questionnaires. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and tests of hypotheses (chi-square, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis, Kendall, and Fisher's exact test). The vast majority of the teenagers (98.7%) expr… Show more

“…The mean age at the first sexual intercourse was similar to the age found by other Brazilian studies (Dallo & Martins, 2018;Oliveira, Béria, & Schermann, 2014;Silva, Lourdes, Barroso, & Guedes, 2015), as well as by international studies (Espada et al, 2014;Ruiz et al, 2015;Young, Burke, & Gabhainn, 2018). In addition, there were no gender-related differences for any of the variables investigated and the age of sexual debut was similar between boys and girls, contrary to other studies reporting a tendency for boys to initiate sexual activity earlier (Moura et al, 2013;Puente et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2015).…”

“…Even reporting good levels of access to information about sex and sexuality in both contexts, it was not associated with less engagement in risky sexual behavior among adolescents. Similarly, other studies have shown a lack of relationship between adequate knowledge of preventive practices and attitudes toward HIV/aids and consistent condom use (Brasil, 2013;Moura et al, 2013;Silva et al, 2015), which suggests that information alone is not sufficient to determine healthier behaviors. Thus, other factors, such as those investigated in this study, should be covered by health strategies directed toward adolescents.…”

“…Most young people are aware in a coherent manner of the sexual practices that make them vulnerable to STDs and HIV (28)(29) , however, at the same time there are studies that draw attention to the irregular use of condoms among Brazilian adolescents (27,29,37) . Information on HIV/AIDS alone does not guarantee the use of condoms, since despite the knowledge about the repercussions of an unprotected sexual encounter, young people have demonstrated risky and non-protective behaviors (29) .…”

“…Information on how to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections should be disseminated early due to the young age of sexual initiation (29) . It can be noticed that a higher number of involved risk factors increase the chances of unprotected sex.…”
