OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalences of asthma and rhinitis in adolescents (13-14 years of age) in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2010, comparing the results with those obtained in a prevalence survey conducted in 2006-2007. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving probabilistic samples of 3,015 and 3,020 adolescents in surveys conducted in 2006-2007 and 2010, respectively. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood protocol was used on both occasions. RESULTS: Comparing the two periods, there were no significant differences regarding cumulative wheezing, active asthma, four or more wheezing attacks within the last year, sleep disturbed by wheezing more than one night per week, and speech-limiting wheezing. The prevalences of exercise-induced wheezing, dry cough at night, and physician-diagnosed asthma were significantly higher in 2010 than in the 2006-2007 period (p < 0.01 for all). The prevalence of physician-diagnosed rhinitis was significantly lower in 2010 (p = 0.01), whereas there were no significant differences between the two periods regarding cumulative rhinitis, current rhinitis, and rhinoconjunctivitis. In both periods, dry cough at night, current rhinitis, and rhinoconjunctivitis were significantly more prevalent in females than in males (p < 0.01 for all). Also in both periods, active asthma, current rhinitis, and rhinoconjunctivitis were more prevalent in private school students than in public school students (p < 0.01 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Our data show that the prevalences of asthma and rhinitis symptoms remain high among 13- and 14-year-olds in Fortaleza, predominantly among females and private school students.

Introduction:Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways, which is increasing its prevalence among teenagers recently. The trigger-related factors are numerous, including environmental factors, genetic, food among others.Objective: Investigate the prevalence of asthma symptoms and possible risk factors in adolescents.Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study conducted in 104 adolescents aged between 13 to 14 years old of both sexes from four educational institutions: three private and one public. Participants answered two questionnaires: one on risk factors for allergic diseases (EISL) and the other on asthma symptoms (ISAAC asthma module).Results: 104 adolescents answered the questionnaire: 54.8% girls and 45.2% boys. Male subjects had the most active asthma (64%) than female (20%) (p = 0.01) and also had more physician-diagnosed asthma (34.4%) than girls (6.1%) (p = 0.04), more wheezing after exercise (34.4%; 12.1%) (p = 0.03). Regarding the association between the symptoms and the risk factors we observed a statistically significant relationship between the presence of wheezing and hospitalization for public schools girls (p = 0.05). Conclusion:There is a higher prevalence of asthma symptoms in males than in females unlike other studies was observed. Why this study was made?The study was developed because the prevalence of asthma symptoms are high among adolescents and over the years other risk factors have been associated with its exacerbation. What researchers have done and found?The researchers investigated possible risk factors related to the onset of asthma symptoms in adolescents and noted that male volunteers had more active asthma than volunteers, also had more asthma diagnosed and wheezing after exercise. With regard to the association between symptoms and risk factors, a statistically significant relationship was observed between the presence of wheezing and hospitalizations for girls from public schools. What the results mean?Although the female gender suffered from hormonal changes during adolescence, it was observed that asthma symptoms were more prevalent in males. It is also worth noting that the volunteers from the public school system showed an association of risk factors with hospitalization, suggesting that the socioeconomic factor may have a greater influence on the prevalence of asthma symptoms than hormonal changes.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of asthma symptoms among schoolchildren aged six to seven years in the municipality of Picos-PI; and to identify risk factors associated with the disease. Methods: A cross-sectional study with children aged six and seven from Picos, in November 2010 and May 2011. To collect data, we used an adapted form of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: Among the 234 children in the study sample, 56% were female. The prevalence of the medical diagnosis of asthma was 7.7%. The following risk factors presented a statistically significant relationship with the occurrence of asthma (p <0.05): wheezing after physical exercise, dry cough at night without having a cold, bronchitis, and having parents with asthma. Conclusion: We observed an underdiagnosis of asthma; there is a necessity for further work to be conducted with a larger sample, to examine more broadly the situation of asthma in children in the municipality of Picos -PI. Resultados: Dentre as 234 crianças da amostra estudada, 56% eram do gênero feminino. A prevalência de diagnóstico médico de asma foi de 7,7%. Os seguintes fatores de risco apresentaram relação estatisticamente significante com a ocorrência de asma (p < 0,05): sibilos após a realização de exercício físico, tosse seca à noite sem estar gripado, bronquite, e ter pais asmáticos. Conclusão: Observou-se o subdiagnóstico da asma e há necessidade de que novos trabalhos sejam realizados com uma amostra maior, para analisar de modo mais amplo a situação da asma em crianças no município de Picos -PI.
