Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera, Psychodidae) in an American tegumentary leishmaniasis transmission area in northern Espírito Santo State, Brazil

Abstract: American tegumentary leishmaniasis is endemic to the Espírito SantoNorthern Espírito Santo was covered by Atlantic Forest until the mid-20 th century, and American tegumentary leishmaniasis does not appear to have constituted a serious public health problem for the original settlers. Furthermore, there are no records of cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis resulting from old infections with Leishmania braziliensis in the region.Beginning in the 1980s, the suspension of insecticide use for malaria control may h… Show more

“…In the current study, the species richness recorded in the peridomiciliary environment (i.e., the least conserved area) of the NMPC was in accordance with those of previous observations in the peridomiciliary environment of the Atlantic Forest, State of Espṍrito Santo (Pinto et al 2010a(Pinto et al , 2012aVirgens et al 2008). However, when we included in our analyses, specimens captured in the forested environment (i.e., the most conserved area) of the NMPC, the species richness increased signiÞcantly.…”

“…This species is abundant in endemic areas of southeastern Brazil, and specimens have been naturally infected by Leishmania ( Viannia ) braziliensis Vianna, 1911 [5,11,4446]. This species is more associated with domiciles and peridomiciles and is strongly attracted to domestic dogs and horses [89,10,47].…”

“…Other common species, such as Lutzomyia choti (Floch and Abonnenc, 1941) and Lutzomyia lenti (Mangabeira, 1938), seem to not be associated with the disease occurrence in ES [5]. However, no consistent investigation has been conducted on the role of these species in the disease transmission, its animal reservoirs, and the interactions between vector species and environmental conditions [21].…”

“…1). Appearance of human ACL cases is usually associated with deforestation, increasing the chances of humanÐvector contact and promoting adaptation of vectors to human environments (Souza et al 2004, das Virgens et al 2008. Similarly, in altered transect B, the possibility of contact between visitors and sand ßies may increase the chances of ACL transmission after hours.…”
