In Brazil, the inclusion of minorities and the most vulnerable members of the population in the health service is still a challenge for health planners. This study analyzed the perception of men who have sex with men (MSM) treated in health units with the onset of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It consists of qualitative research involving 21 MSM, contacted in a non-governmental organization (NGO) and in the Testing and Counseling Center (TCC) in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. The data were collected during two periods: from February until May 2007 and from September until October 2008 by using focused interview, and were organized by subject matter according to the content analysis technique of Bardin. The references to the theoretical concepts of the symbolic violence by Bourdieu and stigma by Goffman were the foundation for the analysis. The results indicate that MSM experienced situations of symbolic violence and avoided seeking primary health care service fearing prejudice and being stigmatized. Even when they sought these services, they tended to demonstrate masculine behavior in order to not be indentified as to their sexual orientation. We concluded that MSM feel excluded and discriminated against in the primary health care service. More studies related to this subject matter are needed to help implement health care policies facilitating the inclusion of and to welcome this group of the population into the general health care service.

This paper presents a comparative study on medical sociology in France and Brazil by means of exchanges and discussions among Brazilian and French sociologists who share mutual interests in medical sociology studies and in the sociological approach of Pierre Bourdieu. This manuscript contains a reflection on the status of medical sociology based on a literature review of the scientific French, North American, British and Brazilian production. Using published papers on the medical field, we sought to clarify the specific ways in which health, disease and medicine are approached in both countries; to discern their historical particularities; and to outline the relations between sociology of health and sociology in the broad sense of the word. We observed a confluence of factors, such as the basis of the formation of medical sociology in France as well as in Brazil: a reforming social project developed by public health doctors, a project developed by social sciences professors to institutionalize the discipline in medical schools, and a conservative reformulation of education during authoritarian governments.

O objetivo do presente artigo é apresentar algumas aproximações salutares entre alguns conceitos bourdieusianos (campo, habitus, distinção e diferença) e a área da saúde. Em primeiro lugar evidenciaremos com apesar de Pierre Bourdieu nunca ter se detido especificamente sobre o campo da saúde, sua teoria e conceitos foram empregados em análises de tal meio. Em seguida faremos uma breve digressão sobre o conceito de habitus em pensadores, que para além de Bourdieu, também se detiveram em teorizar sobre o referido termo. Por fim, rememoramos alguns dados empíricos de pesquisa de mestrado anteriormente realizada, com o sentido de ilustrar os recortes que estabelecem disposições de distinção e diferença junto as práticas acadêmicas e profissionais de sujeitos junto ao campo da saúde.
