Prevalência de anemia e fatores associados em mulheres adultas residentes em São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Abstract: (PR = 3.17; p < 0.001). A protective effect against anemia (PR = 0.44; p = 0.07) was found in women over 50 as compared to younger women (20-29 years). These findings suggest the need for public health policies for anemia prevention in black women.

“…The low iron intake by women was highly significant, while there was a low intake of fiber, niacin and vitamin C among men. The low iron intake of women could be associated with the occurrence of iron-deficiency anemia, a situation found in several studies conducted in samples of Brazilians [41][42][43][44] , emphasizing the need for interventions in this group.…”

“…Brazilian studies referring to the investigation of determining factors for iron-deficiency anemia among women at reproductive age reveal that low socioeconomic conditions 6,7 are favorable for the worsened prevalence of the condition. According to Silva et al 9 , among the risk factors that presented significance for the development of anemia in the assessed women, the type of occupation in the household, lack of waste collection, and lack of prenatal care reflect the unfavorable socioeconomic conditions of this population, corroborating the findings in this study.…”
