Abstract: In June 2006, PAHO/WHO certified Brazil as having eliminated Chagas disease transmission by both the principal vector (Triatoma infestans) and transfusion of blood and blood products. Carlos Chagas' greatest dream was thus achieved, as the result of determination by scientists and thousands of anonymous "health guards" in a saga launched by Emmanuel Dias more than 60 years ago. In the 1970s there were still more than five million Brazilians infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, with an estimated 100 thousand-plus n… Show more

“…In studies carried out in the 1960s and 1970s [27][28][29] the mean age of patients with Cd was ≤25 years. The progressive increase in the mean age of patients over the years is referred to as the cohort effect 30 . In turn, studies from the 1990s tend to include adults ≥40 years and older (adult-elderly).…”

“…The virtual control of T. infestans (a native species of Bolivia, introduced in the late 18 th century in Brazil) (18) , accompanied by the International Elimination of the Transmission of Chagas Disease Certifi cate in 2006 (19) , strengthened the spurious idea that CD had been eliminated in Brazil and disregarded the epidemiological importance of native triatominic species in the Northeast region, such as T. brasiliensis. The signifi cance of these triatomines with regard to maintaining the cycle of T. cruzi near human homes should not be neglected, hence the importance of control activities, epidemiological surveillance and health awareness.…”
