Abstract: Despite technological progress in recent decades, neonatal mortality accounts for some two-thirds of infant deaths where the infant mortality rates are low. This study analyzes neonatal deaths in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, during three periods, beginning with 1994, the year when pediatric and neonatal intensive care beds were created in the city. “…25 Birth weight and prematurity are major risk factors for neonatal mortality. 3,7,11,18 In the present study, there was found an inverse relationship between birth weight and neonatal death, consistent with other studies conducted in Pelotas (Southern Brazil), São Paulo (Southeastern Brazil), and Recife (Northeastern Brazil). 3,12,22 Pre-term newborns were almost twice as likely to die in the neonatal period compared with full-term infants, as reported in a study conducted in São Paulo.…”

“…20 In the city of Londrina, state of Paraná, deaths from BDs occurred, in a decreasing order of importance, due to: multiple defects, heart diseases, diaphragmatic hernia, polycystic kidneys and hydrocephaly. 21 It is more diffi cult to identify multiple BDs when the information is based on SINASC data (0.1%oo LBs). However, after linkage with SIM data, those individuals with multiple BDs are more clearly identifi ed (1.1%oo LBs).…”
