This cross-sectional, analytical and correlational study investigated the existence of Burnout based on a sample of 149 nurses of a university tertiary hospital from October to December 2008 and correlate Burnout with stressors in the hospital work environment. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Nurses’ Stress Inventory and a questionnaire to characterize the subjects were applied. The results indicated the presence of Burnout in 7.3% of nurses (quartile) and 10.22% (tercile), and also a correlation among the inventories’ domains. Vulnerability to this type of illness among nurses was increased by stress experienced in the work environment.

Purpose: to verify the prevalence of well-being and its association with sociodemographic features, health and work-related conditions, and vocal behavior in elementary school teachers in the city of Pelotas, RS. Methods: a cross-sectional observational study with 575 teachers from urban and rural areas. The participants answered a structured questionnaire that included items on sociodemographic, health and work-related conditions. The Faces Scale (Andrews) was used to evaluate their psychological well-being. The Vocal Behavior Profile verified occurrences of abuse and vocal misuse. Poisson regression was used for the multivariate analysis. Results: of the total sample, 79.5% of teachers experienced well-being. It was observed that vocal behavior profile was significantly associated with well-being, and the number of students in the classroom showed a trend towards significance. Conclusion: most teachers had a satisfactory well-being perception. Moreover, a lower well-being perception in the teaching population was mainly related to abusive vocal behavior and, less clearly, to the high number of students per classroom.

ResumoEste estudo investigou as propriedades psicométricas da Escala de Percepção de Estressores Ocupacionais dos Professores -EPEOP. A escala, composta por 22 itens, foi aplicada coletivamente em 404 professores do Ensino Básico de escolas estaduais e municipais de Mossoró (RN), sendo 73,8% mulheres, com idades entre 20 a 68. A fidedignidade do instrumento foi alta com alpha de Cronbach de 0,94. A análise fatorial dividiu a escala em quatro fatores com os seguintes índices de confiabilidade: carga de trabalho (α=0,88), aspectos físicos e ambientais do trabalho (α=0,88), crescimento na carreira e capacitação profissional (α=0,82) e relações com alunos e responsáveis (α=0,79). A média geral da EPEOP foi 46,80 pontos. O instrumento apresentou características psicométricas adequadas para uso em professores, podendo orientar medidas que visem melhoria na qualidade de vida desses profissionais. The EPEOP, composed of 22 items, was applied collectively in the participants' schools. The scale reliability was considered high with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.94. The factorial analysis divided the scale into four factors with the following indices: workload (α=0.88), physical and environmental aspects of work (α=0.88), career growth and professional training (α=0.82), and relationships with students and guardians (α=0.79). The EPEOP overall average for the sample was 46.80 points. The instrument presents adequate psychometric characteristics for evaluating teachers' stress and can orient actions aimed at improving the quality of life of these professionals.Keywords: Scaling; occupational stress; teaching work.
