An experiment was carried out to evaluate the requirement of digestible methionine for growing pullets at growth phase (7 to 12 weeks of age). A completely randomized design was distributed in five treatments, six replicates, and 15 pullets per experimental unit. 450 Dekalb White pullets from the 7th weeks of age, with an average initial weight of 313.14 ± 12.49 g were used. Dietary treatments consisted in five diets supplemented with DL-Methionine which resulted in five levels of digestible methionine (0.266, 0.294, 0.322, 0.350, and 0.378 %). Performance, serological blood, histopathology and histomorphometry data were evaluated. Quadratic responses were observed for final live weight (p < 0.0143), weight gain (p < 0.0073), feed conversion ratio (p < 0.0058), glycogen deposition in the liver (p < 0.0001), gamma-glutamyl transferase enzyme activity (p < 0.0008), and villus height (p < 0.0024) with digestible dMet levels. In conclusion, the use of 0.343 % dMet, corresponding to a dMet:dLys ratio 55, is recommended for white-egg pullets from 7 to 12 weeks of age.

1. This study aimed to provide information on the response of laying-type pullets to dietary threonine (THR) during three periods of growth prior to the onset of lay. Different batches of Dekalb White pullets were used in three separate trial periods (from 4 to 6, 8 to 11 and 13 to 16 weeks of age) using 8 dietary THR concentrations in each period, using a completely randomised design, and with each treatment being replicated 6 times, using 15 birds per replication in period 1 and 8 birds in periods 2 and 3. In period 1 the THR content (THRc) ranged from 2.3 to 7.6 mg/g, in period 2 from 1.7 to 5.5 mg/g, and in period 3 from 1.4 to 4.7 mg THR/g feed. 2. Body weight gain, food intake and the deposition of protein and lipid in the feather-free body and in the feathers were measured in each period. Linear regressions were fitted to all data falling below the break point defined by the broken stick regression, to estimate the efficiency of utilisation of THR. The maximum protein growth rate was 4.0 ± 0.2, 5.3 ± 0.4 and 3.5 ± 0.5 g/d in periods 1, 2 and 3, respectively. 3. The efficiency of utilisation of dietary THR for THR deposition in each period was the same, at 0.85 ± 0.1 mg/mg. As dietary THRc decreased, the amount of body lipid deposition increased. 4. With this information, it is possible to determine the daily requirement for THR for the potential growth of body and feather protein in growing pullets.

ResumoObjetivou-se determinar a exigência de metionina + cistina total para frangas na fase inicial e verificar seu efeito sobre a fase de postura. Na primeira fase experimental, 720 aves (50% Lohmann LSL e 50% Lohmann Brown) com uma semana de idade foram distribuídas em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 x 2 (níveis de met + cis e linhagens), com quatro repetições e 18 aves por repetição. Os níveis de met + cis total estudados foram 0,536; 0,616; 0,696; 0,776; e 0,856 %. Ao atingirem 22 semanas de idade, iniciou-se a segunda fase experimental, sendo utilizadas 240 aves (50% Lohmann LSL e 50% Lohmann Brown) provenientes da primeira fase experimental. A ração fornecida às aves nesta fase foi igual para todos os tratamentos. Na fase de produção avaliaram-se os efeitos residuais das dietas fornecidas no período inicial sobre os parâmetros produtivos. As exigências de metionina + cistina recomendadas para aves leves e semipesadas, no período de 1 a 6 semanas de idade, são de 0,778% de met + cis total (correspondendo a 0,700% de met + cis digestível) e 0,739% de met + cis total (correspondendo a 0,665% de met + cis digestível), respectivamente.Palavras-chave: aminoácidos; maturidade sexual; ovos; poedeiras; requerimentos.
