Nutritional diversity of agricultural and agro-industrial by-products for ruminant feeding

Abstract: Fifty-seven by-products were collected from regions throughout Brazil. Chemical composition, in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility (IVNDFD), and total digestible nutrients (TDN) were determined with the objective of grouping by-products with similar nutritional characteristics. The by-products belonging to group one (G1) presented the highest content of neutral detergent fiber exclusive of ash and nitrogenous compounds [aNDFom(n)] and lowest energy content, with 42.5% and 38.8% of IVNDFD and TDN, resp… Show more

“…Daucus carota var atrorubens and Daucus carota were consistent with that reported by Azevedo et al (2012) but higher than that reported by Wadhwa and Bakshi (2013). The DM content of leave of Beta vulgaris was consistent with that reported by Carter (2015) and Ak and Uzatici, (2011) but higher than that reported by Islam et al (2004) and Gurbuz and Kaplan (2008).…”

“…It is well known that harvesting stage is the most important factor affecting the NDF contents of plants. The NDF content of plants increased with advancing maturity (Kamalak 2010;Kamalak et al, 2011 Azevedo et al (2012). The ADF contents of Raphinus radicula and Raphinus sativus was in agreement with those reported by Wadhwa and Bakshi (2013) and AbdEl-Fattah (2014).…”

“…Thus, the use of by-products of the fruit industry has become a viable alternative because Brazil is the third largest producer of fruits, second only to China and India (AZEVÊDO et al, 2012;FERREIRA et al, 2010;OLIVARES-PÉREZ et al, 2013).…”

“…Para Azevêdo et al (2012) a jaca (in natura e ensilada) apesar de pertencer a um grupo de alimentos alternativos com considerável quantidade de FDN, podem ser utilizadas como substituto parcial de cereais na dieta animal devido a alta digestibilidade de sua FDN.…”
