Show more

“…In the jejunum of pigs, M7741 (genotype Ⅲ) of the T. gondii caused atrophy of the external muscle layer after 30 d of infection and then hypertrophy 60 d after infection [40] . Hypertrophy of the external muscle layer was also found in the jejunum and ileum of chicken infected with ME-49 tissue cysts of T. gondii and in the jejunum of these same animals when infected with oocysts of the M7741 strain [32,41] . There are no previous studies in the literature assessing the effects of T. gondii infection on the external muscle layer of the intestine in rats.…”

“…Eighty measurements were made for each structure, which were evenly distributed around the intestinal circumference of each mouse (Braga et al 2011). Images were captured under 409 magnification to measure the total wall thickness.…”

“…We have shown that the infection can compromise the intestinal structure and innervation, even in immunocompetent individuals with no classic clinical signs of toxoplasmosis . We observed local inflammation that was possibly induced by the presence of the parasite in the organ, reflected by the presence of tissue cysts and parasitic DNA . The submucosal plexus and EGCs appear to play a primordial role in the response to infection .…”
