Show more

“…The goal of this procedure was to preserve the sample's integrity, similar to that of the other investigators who stopped drilling when the white layer was evident and the wall was soft to the touch [6,11]. However, other authors stopped drilling only after the bottom of the hole was pink [3]; this color indicates the presence of blood vessels and marks the end of the stratum medium and the start of the internal extract.…”

“…With regard to performing a hoof biopsy to assess laminar tissue, there are only six reports of this procedure, of which five were in horses [6,7,[9][10][11] and one was in cattle [3]. The first step to obtain a laminar tissue sample was to drill a cone-shaped hole in the hoof wall, from which the external extract and the rigid part of the stratum medium were removed using a grinding stone attached to a rotary drill.…”

“…Biopsy has been used to histologically evaluate equine lamella by other authors (Hanly et al 2009, Paes Leme et al 2010, Visser & Pollitt 2011, Gravena et al 2012, including serial collection (Hanly et al 2009, Visser & Pollitt 2011. In the present study, a new hoof biopsy technique was used.…”
