Show more

“…The dilution ratio affects the sperm motility rate after cryoconservation (Viveiros et al, 2009). For lane snapper sperm were no significant differences between the proportions of 1:1 and 1:3 (P> 0.05), while for the other ratios evaluated motility rate and motility time decreased significantly (P <.05).…”

“…In Brazilian fish species, some cryoprotectants have been tested and, in most of these studies, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) at concentrations of 5-15% was the most effective (Table 5). More recently, the use of methylglycol as cryoprotectant has yielded higher post-thaw motility when compared to DMSO in sperm of all species tested (B. nattereri, B. orbignyanus, L. obtusidens and P. lineatus; Table 5), except for S. brasiliensis (Viveiros et al 2008a). Egg yolk and milk powder, known for their membrane-stabilizing activity, are Cruz-Casallas et al (2004 and Shimoda (2004) frequently added to the extender, typically in combination with glucose (Table 5).…”

“…Evaluations of sperm quality of S. brasiliensis semen cryopreserved in standard solution showed that the highest values of motility were obtained in samples diluted in cryoprotectant solution at a ratio of 1:5, compared to samples diluted at 1:10 (Viveiros et al, 2009b). Carolsfeld et al (2003) recommend a dilution between 1:3 and 1:5 for the sperm of South American fish.…”

“…The use of cryopreserved dourado sperm has begun with Coser, Godinho and Ribeiro (1984), and resumed years later by Carolsfeld, Godinho, Zaniboni-Filho and Harvey (2003), Viveiros, Oliveira, Maria, Orfão, and Souza (2009b), Zanandrea, Weingartner and Zaniboni-Filho (2014) 2015). Most studies use sperm motility as a parameter for sperm quality, but, according to Bobe & Labbé (2010), only the success of fertilization allows to prove accurately the quality of sperm and oocyte.…”
