ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of inclusion or non-inclusion of short lactations and cow (CGG) and/or dam (DGG) genetic group on the genetic evaluation of 305-day milk yield (MY305), age at first calving (AFC), and first calving interval (FCI) of Girolando cows. Covariance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method in an animal model of single trait analyses. The heritability estimates for MY305, AFC, and FCI ranged from 0.23 to 0.29, 0.40 to 0.44, and 0.13 to 0.14, respectively, when short lactations were not included, and from 0.23 to 0.28, 0.39 to 0.43, and 0.13 to 0.14, respectively, when short lactations were included. The inclusion of short lactations caused little variation in the variance components and heritability estimates of traits, but their non-inclusion resulted in the re-ranking of animals. Models with CGG or DGG fixed effects had higher heritability estimates for all traits compared with models that consider these two effects simultaneously. We recommend using the model with fixed effects of CGG and inclusion of short lactations for the genetic evaluation of Girolando cattle.

a b s t r a c tThis work aims to evaluate the economic feasibility of a breeding program for dairy goats in developing countries. A traditional scheme was compared with a scheme using a progeny test. In the traditional scheme, farm records are used and the selection of bucks is based on reproduction and milk yield of their dams, while the selection of does is based on their own performance and on their dam's performance. Analyses were performed using the ZPLAN software, which uses a deterministic approach to estimate genetic and economic gains in breeding programs. The traditional selection scheme showed no economic viability and did not cover the costs for maintenance of the breeding program. The scheme using progeny tests of young bucks was viable, with considerable genetic profits for the objectives of selection and individual traits. The economic returns of this program exceeded its costs, with a return on investment of approximately 3%. In this scheme, somatic cell count was the trait with the largest economic impact, followed by milk yield. The intensity of use of young bucks in progeny testing should not exceed 10%. Above this value, no substantial monetary gains were obtained for the objective of selection, besides the reduction of the net present value of the breeding program.

-This study examined the effects of crossbreeding low genetic potential cows of Bos indicus origin characterized by Gyr crossed with Holstein-Friesian and Simmental bulls to produce animals in a low input dual purpose system. The farm is situated near Brasilia, in the savannah region of Brazil. The climate of the region is classified as Aw by Köppen.Data was available on 1580 calvings and completed lactations of cows with three genetic types: Gyr, Holstein-Friesian × Gyr and Simmental × Gyr. The bulls ran with the cows all year round and the diet comprised of pasture (mainly Brachiaria and Andropogon) during the summer (rainy season) and milled sugar cane with added urea during the winter (dry season). A mineral salt mixture was available ad libitum. Data was analysed using Statistical Analysis System. The results show that, under low input management conditions, the crossbred cows produce approximately twice the volume of milk per lactation, calve at a younger age and have a shorter open period, but there are no significant differences between crosses for growth rates of the calves or body condition of the cows. In this system, crossbred cows had production higher indices than zebu cattle. The best indices were found for cows calving in the rainy season (September to December) and thinner cows (with body condition 3-5 on a scale of 9).
