The objective of this study was to determine the demographic, clinical and survival characteristics and to identify risk factors for mortality due to tricuspid valve dysplasia in UK dogs. Records of client-owned dogs diagnosed with tricuspid valve dysplasia at a referral centre were retrospectively reviewed. Only dogs diagnosed with tricuspid valve dysplasia based on the presence of a right-sided heart murmur identified prior to one year of age, and confirmed with Doppler echocardiography, were included. Dogs with concomitant cardiac diseases, pulmonary hypertension and/or trivial tricuspid regurgitation were excluded. Analysed data included signalment, reason for presentation, clinical signs, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic features, survival status and cause of death. Survival times and risk factors for mortality were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression. Eighteen dogs met inclusion criteria. Border collies were over-represented (p= 0.014). Dogs were most frequently referred for investigation of heart murmur. The most common arrhythmia was atrial fibrillation (n=3). Median survival time from diagnosis of tricuspid valve dysplasia was 2775 days (range 1-3696 days; 95% CI 1542.41-4007.59) and from onset of right-sided congestive heart failure was 181 days (range 1-2130 days; 95% CI 0-455.59). Syncope was the sole risk factor for cardiac death. In this population of UK dogs, tricuspid valve dysplasia was uncommon but, when severe, frequently led to rightsided congestive heart failure. Prognosis was favourable for mild and moderate tricuspid dysplasia. Survival time was reduced with right-sided congestive heart failure but varied widely. Risk of cardiac death was significantly increased if syncope had occurred.

The aim of the study was to estimate prevalence of tricuspid dysplasia (TD) in dogs with respect to breed, age, sex, clinical signs, and echocardiographic findings and to compare this data with literature. TD was found in 15 dogs (6.5% of congenital cardiac disease) of 215 dogs with congenital heart defects. All dogs had right heart enlargement on thoracic radiographs, echocardiography, and electrocardiography. Doppler echocardiography revealed tricuspid valve regurgitation. Seven dogs presented no clinical symptoms to date. TD took the form of Ebstein anomaly in all Labrador Retrievers, one Boxer, and one German Shepherd dog. TD predominated in males (11 males vs. three females). The body weight of the affected dogs, with the exception of the Miniature Schnauzer, exceeded 20 kg. Two dogs (Boxer and Bull Terrier) had additional congenital cardiac lesions in the form of mitral valve dysplasia. The most affected breeds in the study were the Labrador Retriever and Boxer.

Summary: 2-year-old, intact female, a Golden Retriever Dog was presented with the signs of respiratory distress, exercise intolerance, and muscular weakness. A high-grade systolic murmur was auscultated over the tricuspid valvular area. Thoracic radiographs showed an enlarged D-shape heart and free fluid (chylothorax) in the pleural space. ECG revealed small QRS complexes. Doppler echocardiography disclosed severe tricuspid insufficiency with moderate pulmonary hypertension, and tricuspid leaflets also were displaced down into the right ventricle, substantiating Ebstein's anomaly. Five-weeks after the medical therapy, patient died at home. The owner of the patient refused the necropsy. The basal attachments of TV are ventrally displaced into the right ventricle (RV) resulting in a further malformation named Ebstein's anomaly (14,22).Chylothorax a triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (Chol) rich fluid is an infrequent cause of pleural effusion (10). There is limited information on chylothorax relating with heart diseases in human (1, 7) and animals (9). Although only two dogs with chylothorax associated with congenital cardiac disorders of TVD (9, 25) have been described, chylothorax due to Ebstein's anomaly in dogs has not been reported yet. Thus, we reported here, for the first time, Ebstein's anomaly as well as its possible mechanism(s) associated with chylothorax in a dog.The dog (2-year-old, intact female, Golden Retriever, 24.5 kg) was presented to the private clinic with the signs of exercise intolerance and respiratory distress.
