Morphometric analysis of the thymus of puppies infected with the Snyder Hill Strain of canine distemper virus

Abstract: The thymic morphometry analysis was used for determining apoptosis and atrophy of the thymus of eight puppies inoculated with canine distemper virus (CDV). Three healthy dogs were used as negative controls. Sections, 5µm thick, were stained by HE and Shorr, and the latter were evaluated by morphometry. CDV nucleoprotein was detected by immunohistochemistry. Morphometric results confirmed lymphoid hypotrophy in CDV inoculated dog thymuses, more stroma, less parenchyma and higher apoptotic index/field than negat… Show more

“…The changes found in OD, SDtd and IOD values, in association with a reduction in area and perimeter, are typical of nuclei in chromatin fragmentation. The nuclear alterations described for the RTECs in present study are similar to those described for the thymus (24) and cerebellum (15) of dogs infected with distemper, suggesting that chromatin fragmentation due to cell death or low physico-chemical stability of DNA is an event closely associated with the tissue lesions that accompany the disease.…”

“…Foram contados os pontos que incidiram sobre as células hematopoiéticas. No timo, foram utilizadas cinco lâminas/grupo/dia de nascido e mensurados 10 lóbulos tímicos para determinação da área tímica, área cortical e área medular (Alves et al, 2006). Todas as medidas foram efetuadas mediante o sistema analisador de imagens, Image Pro-plus, acoplado a um microscópio binocular da Olympus.…”
