Orchiectomy is often employed in zootechnical activities with the main objective of carcass improvement; therefore, the search for alternatives that minimize surgical trauma, operative time and mainly decrease operating costs is pertinent. The nylon clamp is a tensile strength device, well tolerated by the body and inexpensive. It has been used as a hemostatic method in several surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the operability and functionality of this device for the preliminary hemostasis of the spermatic cord in the open orchiectomy, comparing it to the surgical nylon thread. Twenty male pigs were divided into 2 experimental groups: GI (clamp - 10 animals) and GII (surgical nylon thread - 10 animals). The surgical time, the degree of hemostasis, the size of the incision, the presence or absence of edema and secretions, besides the weight gain were evaluated. For analysis of inflammatory response, fibrinogen was assessed. Compared to surgical nylon, the clamps presented advantages over surgical time and blood loss. It was concluded that the use of nylon clamps for hemostasis of the spermatic cords of pigs submitted to orchiectomies reduced the total time of surgeries, as well as hemorrhages, when compared to hemostasis with nylon thread. Furthermore, weight gain and induction of inflammatory response were not influenced by the hemostasis method used.

PURPOSE:To describe video-assisted ovariohysterectomy (OHE) with two portals access in adult intact queens. METHODS:Fifty-two females cats were used. A 4 mm cannula was positioned in the abdomen through an incision close to the umbilicus (first portal), and a pneumoperitoneum was established. A second portal was positioned in the midline of the pre-pubic region. Females were positioned in right lateral recumbency to locate the left ovarian pedicle, and the uterine horn was held by a transcutaneous suture.The pedicle was cauterized and incised. The procedure was then performed on the contralateral ovary. The ovaries were exteriorized from the abdomen, along with the uterus, through the second access point. The uterine body was exposed, fixed and sectioned, and the abdominal incisions were sutured. RESULTS:Surgeries were performed in an average of 41.4±14.2 minutes. The main complications included hypotension (7.7%) and subcutaneous emphysema (7.7%), and 13.5% of the surgeries were converted to laparotomy. CONCLUSION:Ovariohysterectomy using a video-assisted technique and two access portals is safe, has minimal risks and is effective for the spaying of queens.

RESUMOForam avaliadas 24 gatas, hígidas, sem raça definida, distribuídas em três grupos de oito animais. Descreveu-se o acesso laparoscópico para ovariossalpingo-histerectomia (OSH) e comparou-se o uso do eletrocautério bipolar (grupo I), do clipe de titânio (grupo II) e da ligadura com fio de sutura (grupo III) para a oclusão dos vasos ovarianos e uterinos. Hemorragia e enfisema subcutâneo foram as principais complicações observadas no transoperatório e hematoma subcutâneo e deiscência de sutura, as do pós-operatório. O procedimento cirúrgico e a técnica operatória mostraram-se viáveis nos três grupos. O uso do eletrocautério bipolar apresentou vantagens na comparação com os outros métodos de hemostasia.
