Abstract: The effect of Goezia leporini Martins & Yoshitoshi, 2003 (Nematoda: Anisakidae) infection on the haematological characteristics of cultivated Leporinus macrocephalus (Osteichthyes:Anostomidae) was studied. Paleness of gills, kidneys, liver and heart, black spots on the kidney and accumulation of fluid in the visceral cavity, stomach and intestines were observed. Gall bladder content had pale and translucent aspect. Strong and slight positive correlations between number of nematodes and fish weight were estima… Show more

“…WBC counts increase significantly in infested E. maclovinus at 2, 3 and 4 wpi, correlating with the studies by Jori and Mohamad (2008) and Harikrishnan et al (2012). The RBC counts decrease during the C. rogercresseyi infestation, which is similar to studies of other parasites (HORTON;OKAMURA, 2003;MARTINS et al, 2004;TAVARES-DIAS et al, 2002). Hematocrit and electrolyte levels are secondary indicators of chronic stress, indicating the osmoregulatory status of the fish (TAVARES-DIAS et al, 2007).…”

“…Sea louse cause a local inflammatory response and blood loss at the site of attachment but do not appear to suppress host defense mechanisms during the early stages of infestation (TAVARES-DIAS et al, 2007;WAGNER et al, 2008). Parasitic infestations can influence blood parameters, such as anemia and white cells count unbalances in other host fishes (HORTON;OKAMURA, 2003;MARTINS et al, 2004;SILVA-SOUZA et al, 2000;TAVARES-DIAS et al, 1999, 2002WAGNER et al, 2008).…”

“…Shah et al (2009) reported that change in haemotological indices of some carps which infected with helminth parasites. Some haematological parameters (HT, MCV and MCHC) showed reduce trend in Leporinus macrocephalus naturally infected by Goezia leporini (Nematoda) (Martins et al 2004). Natarajan and Felix (1987) observed in Myslus glllio, contaminated by various parasites, including Ergasilus sp.…”

“…The blood was utilized to measure hematocrit (Goldenfarb et al, 1971); glucose (Accu-Chek Advantage 2 Roche) according to Azevedo et al (2006); total count of red blood cells (RBC) with haemocytometer, total count of white blood cells (WBC), and total number of thrombocytes by indirect method (Martins et al, 2004a). For differential counting of leucocytes, the smears were stained by Giemsa/May-Grunwald (Rosenfeld, 1947) in which a hundred cells were counted for the establishment of each cell contents.…”

“…The haematological parameters are an important tool of diagnosis that reveals the state of health of fish (Blaxhall, 1972;Rehulka, 2002;Martins et al, 2004a). For example, decreased red blood cells and hematocrit were found in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) infected with V. anguillarum (Harbell et al, 1979); in Asian cichlid fish (Etroplus suratensis) with epizootic ulcerative syndrome (Pathiratne and Rajapakshe, 1998); in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with ulcerous dermatitis (Rehulka, 1998); in rainbow trout experimentally infected with Aeromonas sobria and A. caviae (Rehulka, 2002); in carp (Cyprinus carpio) experimentally infected with A. hydrophila (Harikrishnan et al, 2003) and in Nile tilapia experimentally infected with Streptococcus iniae (Chen et al, 2004).…”
