Introduction:A sero-epidemiological survey was undertaken to detect the circulation of arboviruses in free-living non-human primates. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from 16 non-human primates ( 13 Sapajus spp. and three Alouatta caraya) that were captured using terrestrial traps and anesthetic darts in woodland regions in the municipalities of Campo Grande, Aquidauana, Jardim, Miranda and Corumbá in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The samples were sent to the Instituto Evandro Chagas (IEC) in Ananindeua, Pará, Brazil, to detect antibodies against 19 species of arboviruses using a hemagglutination inhibition test (HI). Results: Of the 16 primates investigated in the present study, fi ve (31.2%) were serologically positive for an arbovirus. Of these fi ve, two (12.5%) exhibited antibodies to the Flavivirus genus, one (6.2%) exhibited a monotypic reaction to Cacipacoré virus, one (6.2%) was associated with Mayaro virus, and one (6.2%) was positive for Oropouche virus. Conclusions: Based on the positive serology observed in the present study, it was possible to conclude that arboviruses circulate among free-living primates. The viruses in the areas studied might have been introduced by infected humans or by primates from endemic or enzootic areas. Studies of this nature, as well as effi cient and continuous surveillance programs, are needed to monitor viral activities in endemic and enzootic regions.

“…We studied 2 social groups of emperor tamarins (IMP A: 4-5 individuals and IMP B: 5 individuals) and 2 social groups of saddleback tamarins (FUS-A: 4-6 individuals and FUS-C: 5-6 individuals) ( Table I). We cage-trapped individuals using the Peruvian method (Encarnación et al, 1990), tranquilized them with a mixture of tiletamine hydrochloride and zolazepam hydrochloride (Telazol  , Elkins-Sinn, Inc., Cherry Hill, NJ 08003, USA) diluted in 10 ml of distilled water using doses according to Santos et al (1999), measured the tamarins, and marked all group members (except the infants of group FUS-A) with colored collars for individual recognition. At the field site, groups of saddleback and emperor tamarins form mixed-species troops.…”

Use of Social and Ecological Information in Tamarin Foraging Decisions

A major consequence of group living is that foragers may rely on social information in addition to ecological information to locate feeding sites. Although conspecifics can provide cues as to the spatial location of food patches, individual foraging decisions also must include some assessment of the likelihood of obtaining access to a resource other group members seek. This likelihood differs in the 2 models generally proposed to explain intragroup social foraging: the information-sharing model and the producer-scrounger model. We conducted an experimental field study on wild groups of emperor (Saguinus imperator) and saddleback (S. fuscicollis) tamarins to determine the foraging strategies adopted by individual group members and their relationship to social rank, food intake, and the ability to use ecological and social information in making intra-patch foraging decisions. Individual tamarins applied different behavioral strategies compatible with a finder-joiner paradigm to solve foraging problems. About half of the individuals in each study group initiated 74%-90% of all food searches and acted as finders. Most alpha individuals adopted a joiner strategy by monitoring the activities of others' to obtain a reward. The individual arriving first at a reward platform enjoyed a finder's advantage. Despite differences in search effort, both finders and joiners presented similar abilities in learning to associate ecological cues with the presence of food rewards at our experimental feeding stations. We conclude 1322 Bicca-Marques and Garber that within a group foraging context, tamarins integrate social and ecological information in decision-making.

Animais presentes em zoológicos frequentemente necessitam de captura e anestesia para a realização de procedimentos clínicos e cirúrgicos. A anestesia total intravenosa apresenta vantagens como redução do estresse cirúrgico e menor depressão cardiovascular e respiratória, entretanto, ainda são escassas as pesquisas dedicadas dentro deste contexto. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste relato foi avaliar o protocolo anestésico empregado, visando um procedimento seguro e passível de reversão para a espécie silvestre selecionada. Acompanhou-se a anestesia de um leão (Panthera leo), macho, adulto, proveniente do Zoológico Municipal de Curitiba, submetido a procedimento endodôntico. A medicação pré-anestésica constituiu-se de dexmedetomidina (6µg/kg), metadona (0,2mg/kg), midazolam (0,1mg/kg) e tiletamina-zolazepam (1,2mg/kg). A indução foi realizada com propofol (1mg/kg) e o animal foi intubado. Visando promover analgesia local, fora realizado bloqueio infraorbitário esquerdo com 5mL de lidocaína a 2%. A manutenção foi realizada por meio do fornecimento de propofol (0,02-0,1mg/kg/h), dexmedetomidina (0,5mg/kg/h) e remifentanil (5mg/kg/h). Pôde-se concluir que o protocolo realizado se mostrou tanto eficaz quanto seguro para a referida espécie encaminhada ao procedimento em questão.
