The Japanese pumpkin known as "Tetsukabuto" is the result of crossing selected lines of squash. Squashes are highly susceptible to weed interference due to slow initial growth, requiring more considerable attention as to their control. Studies focusing on the losses caused by weeds to Japanese pumpkin hybrids are scarce. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of weed control on the fruit yield of Japanese pumpkin hybrid cultivars. A randomized block design with four replications in a 3x4 factorial scheme was used. Three cultivars (Corina F1, Triunfo F1, and Takayama F1) and four weed control periods, without weed control, weed control from 0 to 30 and from 0 to 60 days after transplanting (DAT), and weed control throughout the crop cycle (continuous control) were evaluated. The harvest was carried out at 105 DAT, and it was evaluated population density of the weed community, yield, fruit diameter, fruit fresh mass, number of fruits per plant, pulp thickness, and internal fruit cavity thickness. The weed control from 0 to 60 DAT and continuous weed control resulted in the lowest weed population density and weed dry matter. The weed control from 0 to 60 DAT provided a higher number of fruits per plant, fruit diameter, fruit fresh mass, and thicker pulp. The highest development and fruit yield of Japanese pumpkin hybrids was observed when the plants were free from weed interference until 60 days after transplanting.

RESUMOFoi realizado um experimento de campo na Estação Experimental Agrícola da Bayer CropScience, localizada em Paulínia -SP, com o objetivo de estudar a persistência de isoxaflutole aplicado em pré-emergência, na cultura de batata cv. Monalisa, em solo argiloso. O experimento foi disposto em blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas e repetidos quatro vezes. Nas parcelas foram estudadas as doses de isoxaflutole 0, 75, 150 e 300 g/ha. No dia da aplicação do produto e em intervalos semanais até os 140 dias, exceto aos 119 dias, foram retiradas amostras de solo. A atividade residual do isoxaflutole foi avaliada empregando-se a técnica de bioensaios, sendo usado o feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Eté) , como planta-teste. O período residual de cada dose foi determinado através de análise de regressão polinomial, estabelecida por dose. A perda da atividade residual de isoxaflutole em solo argiloso nas condições de outono-inverno foi bastante lenta. Para as doses de 75 e 150 g/ha, o período residual foi de, respectivamente, 84 e 112 dias, sendo observado aos 70 e 98 dias atividade de recarga. Para a dose de 300 g/ha, o período residual foi superior a 140 dias. Palavras-chave: bioensaio, isoxazole, período residual. ISOXAFLUTOLE PERSISTENCE IN A CLAY SOIL CULTIVATED WITH POTATO ABSTRACTIn order to study the isoxaflutole persistence in a clay soil cultivated with potato cv. Monalisa, a field experiment was carried out at Bayer CropScience Experimental Station, in Paulínia -SP. A complete split-plot randomized block design with four replication was used. In the main plots were studied the rates 0, 75, 150 and 300 g ai/ha in a pre-emergence application. On the day of treatment and at seven day intervals until 140 days after treatment, except at 119 days, soil cores were taken from each plot. The isoxaflutole residual activity was evaluated by bioassay using bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Eté) as a test-plant. The isoxaflutole persistence of each rate was analyzed by regression analysis, with time as the independent variable and rate herbicide remaining as the dependent variable. The lost of the isoxaflutole residual activity in a clay soil was very slow. For the 75 and 150 g/ha rates, the residual period were, respectively, 84 and 112 days; it was observed recharge activity at 70 and 98 days. For the 300 g/ha rate, residual period was greater than 140 days.
