Trapping, restraint and clinical-morphological traits of wild canids (Carnivora, Mammalia) from the Brazilian Cerrado

Abstract: This article presents a simple, safe and efficient method for the capture and chemical immobilization of three species of wild canids from the Serra do Cipó National Park region, in the Cerrado biome of Southeastern Brazil. Morphological measurements and anesthesia data obtained during the captures are also described. Such data are essential due to the necessity for invasive research for monitoring programs, clinical cases analysis, and ecological or epidemiological investigations in wild or captive Neotropica… Show more

“…This difference might be related to different feeding habits between these species, as L culpaeus is almost strictly carnivorous 41 , while L sechurae is omnivorous with marked seasonal variations (ie, it is almost strictly frugivorous during dry season). 1,2 There was a higher number (12) of variables found to be significantly different between captive and free-ranging animals within each sex than between sexes within each life condition (1 variable only). This finding would suggest lifestyle-associated factors might be more influential on the assessed variables than sex-associated factors.…”

“…14 Traps were checked and baited twice daily at sunrise and at sunset. 12 The frequency of trapping efforts was balanced throughout the year attempting to avoid overrepresenting either dry or humid seasons. Once captured, each fox was weighed inside the trap for drug dosage calculation.…”

“…Recently, the hoary fox was classified as "Vulnerable to Extinction", due to rates of habitat loss and high human causes mortality . Based on the ecological importance and conservation status of most Cerrado's wild canids, research efforts towards some species have been increasing (Jácomo, Silveira & Diniz-Filho 2004b;Curi & Talamoni 2006;Lemos, Facure & Azevedo 2011;). However, ecological and biological parameters from monitoring programs and/or mid-long term projects are still necessary for developing effective and appropriate conservation and management strategies for canid species.…”
