Abundance and composition of Rotifera in an abandoned meander lake (Lago Amapá) in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil

Abstract: The rotifer community in Lago Amapá (abandoned meander lake of the Rio Acre floodplain) was investigated with respect to seasonal changes. Sampling was performed at three collection stations, generally weekly, during the dry season between May 8, 1997 and October 31, 1997, and during the rainy season between January 2, 1998 and February 24, 1998. The density and composition of rotifer species (48 taxons of rotifers) were determined, and their diversity and abundance were observed to be greater, respectively, a… Show more

“…According to José de Paggi and Paggi (2007), Keppeler and Hardy (2004), Thomaz et al (2007) and Alho (2008), the variation in the hydrometrical level in floodplain environments can be considered as a complex variable because it reflects not only the water volume in the basin, but also changes in the environmental conditions affecting the abundance of organisms directly or indirectly. These authors also considered that during the limnophase, there is a greater influence of local factors such as ecosystem productivity on the structure of such as reduced values of dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity and nutrients.…”

“…Among zooplankton, rotifers represent the major fraction in the Three Gorges Reservior (Zhou et al, 2006b(Zhou et al, , 2007). The temporal dynamic of rotifers in a new impoundment is very complex and exhibits a strong variation over a short period of time (Keppeler & Hardy, 2004). Until now, the vertical distribution of rotifers on short-time scale is missing (Andersen et al, 2001).…”
