Hydrological pulses are the main factor regulating the structure of biological communities in floodplains. Reservoirs above this ecosystem change the environment's dynamics and the community's biodiversity. This study evaluated the structure and stability of the rotifer community in response to changes in hydrological pulses after the Porto Primavera impoundment in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The community was studied in a river and in a floodplain lake downstream of the dam over a four-year period before and after the impoundment. A decrease in species richness and abundance was observed soon after the impoundment, followed by an increase in these attributes and in specific diversity when the hydrometric level of the Paraná River rose and, consequently, increased the connectivity between the floodplain environments. Conochilus coenobasis, Filinia longiseta, Keratella cochlearis, Lecane proiecta and Polyarthra dolichoptera persisted throughout the study and contributed to community stability (the maintenance of rank in species abundance over time), which was high in the floodplain lake, mainly after the impoundment. Reductions in the frequency, intensity and amplitude of potamophase pulses after the impoundment led to the decrease in species richness and the increases in abundance, community stability, and species diversity, which determine community resilience.

“…Brachionus calyciflorus es una especie indicadora de eutroficación, observándose altas densidades de este rotífero durante las tres ocasiones de muestreo, lo cual está en armonía con niveles de oxígeno disuelto bajos, cuyo promedio fue menor a 4 mg L -1 en el presente estudio (Tabla II) (Sampaio et al 2002). Las familias Lecanidae, típicamente litoral con cuatro taxa y Brachionidae, típicamente planctónica con cinco taxa fueron las familias de rotíferos más frecuentemente observadas en el presente trabajo (Tabla I), las cuales son predominantes en ambientes tropicales (Keppeler & Hardy 2004b). RESUMENPantanos de Villa es un humedal costero conformado por varios cuerpos de agua, permanentes y estacionales. Este ecosistema es reconocido internacionalmente como sitio RAMSAR y se encuentra ubicado al sur de la zona urbana de Lima, Perú. En junio y octubre de 2004 y en abril del 2005 se llevaron a cabo censos de la biodiversidad y abundancia de las comunidades zooplanctónicas litorales, representando a diferentes cuerpos de agua permanentes en un total de 21 puntos de muestreo. Las muestras de zooplancton fueron colectadas usando una red de plancton de 75mm de diámetro y una apertura de 120 mm, y fueron preservadas empleando una solución de formol azucarado al 4 %. Se determinaron algunos parámetros limnológicos como Oxígeno Disuelto (OD) (mg L -1 ), transparencia (cm), temperatura del agua (T agua ) (°C), temperatura del aire (T aire ) (°C) y profundidad máxima (cm) de cada cuerpo de agua. Los resultados indicaron la presencia de 43 taxa, siendo más abundantes y frecuentes los rotíferos Brachionus calyciflorus (Pallas 1776) y Epiphanes sensa (Müller 1773), los ostrácodos, el nemátodo Rhabdolaimus terrestris de Mann 1880 y el ciliado Vorticella campanula Ehrenberg, 1831. El número promedio de organismos·L -1 fue de 337±80 y el número promedio de taxa por punto de muestreo fue de 11,2±2,1. Existieron diferencias significativas en el OD, T agua y T aire entre las estaciones muestreadas. El análisis de componentes principales (ACP) indicó un componente conformado por OD, T agua y T aire y otro formado por la transparencia y la profundidad. The Three Gorges Dam was built in 2005 with a storage capacity of 39.3 billion m 3 , ranking 22nd in the world. However, since the impoundment of the reservoir, serious blooms of phytoplankton have occurred. Rotifers, having a key role in the freshwater aquatic food web, are important grazers of phytoplankton and an essential food resource to higher trophic consumers. To explore the impacts of phytoplankton blooms on the rotifer community, daily and vertical surveys of rotifers were conducted in a bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir (Xiangxi Bay). Altogether 46 rotifer species were registered, and Synchaeta tremula, Polyarthra vulgaris, and Brachionus calyciflorus were the most abundant species accounting for 36, 26, and 16% of the mean rotifer densities, respectively. Although these dominant species always prevailed in the rotifer community, their proportions changed significantly from non-bloom phase to bloom phase, e.g., the significance of S. tremula deceased from 46.8 to 33.2%, while P. vulgaris and B. calyciflorus increased from 23.9 and 13.9% to 26.2 and 16.2%, respectively. In the vertical water column, all the rotifer following phytoplankton displayed an aggregated distribution, concentrating at the upper layers (0.5-5 m), especially during the bloom phase. From the non-bloom phase to the bloom phase, rotifer densities, the dominant rotifers, Shannon-Wiener and Margalef's diversity increased significantly, while the evenness displayed the opposite trend. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) revealed that the samples in the non-bloom phase were well separated from those in the bloom phase. This means that the outbreak of the diatom bloom in the Xiangxi Bay had significant impacts on the rotifer community. Further investigations are needed to address the impacts of the changes of rotifer community on higher trophic levels.
