“…Although the biology and taxonomy of preponines has been the focus of several studies (e.g. Muyshondt, 1974; Johnson & Descimon, 1988, 1989; Llorente‐Bousquets et al , 1992; Salazar, 1999; DeVries & Walla, 2001; Furtado, 2001, 2008; Berthier, 2005), historically there has been much disagreement about the higher‐level and species‐level classification. The current generic classification of Preponini (Lamas, 2004) follows that of other authors (e.g.…”

“…Additionally, a series of dark spines on the protuberance posterior to the head horns is characteristic of Prepona (Fig. 51), as first noticed by Furtado () on P. amydon ferdinandi and further noted on M. pheridamas by Furtado (), P. claudina annetta by Casagrande and Mielke (), P. laertes laertes by Dias et al . () and P. pylene by Bonfantti D (unpublished data).…”

“…Some characters previously referred to as diagnostic for Archaeoprepona immature stages were not supported by our review, such as a drastic colour change before pupation and the presence of whitish scattered spots in pupae, as indicated by Muyshondt (). The former has also been noted in M. pheridamas (Cramer, 1777) (Furtado ), P. amydon ferdinandi (Fruhstorfer, 1895) (Furtado ), P. hewitsonius beata (Staudinger, [1885]) (Teshirogi ) and P. amydon philatelica (Janzen & Hallwachs ), and yellowish spots decorate the pupae of A. camilla metabus (Janzen & Hallwachs ). DeVries () further suggested that Prepona could be distinguished from Archaeoprepona by its crooked posterior abdominal projections, but mature larvae of both genera can twist or straighten these projections freely.…”

“…Eggs of Prepona are described as “smooth” and without “visible sculptures”, even at ten times magnification; the first instar head capsule is always somewhat triangular in shape, stretched dorso-ventrally; A2 with hemispheric projections; and A9+10 with two tiny posterior projections, dorsal to the anal opening (Muyshondt 1973; Furtado 2001). As previously noted by some authors, Prepona immature stages seem remarkably similar to several species of Agrias Doubleday, even enough to be considered congeneric (Rydon 1971; Furtado 2000; JSM Bizarro pers.…”
