Descrição histológica de gônadas de traíra Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch) (Osteichthyes, Erythrinidae) da barragem do rio Gramame, Alhandra, Paraíba, Brasil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Histological description ofthe gonads ofthe traíra Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch) (Ostcichthyes, Erythrinidae) from the Gramame River Reservoir, Alhandra, Paraíba, Brazil. The reproductive cycIe 01' Hoplias malabaricus Bloch, 1794, was studied through histological preparations, based on 102 specimens collected in the Gramame reservo ir, Paraiba State, from August 1993 to July 1994. Seven developmental stages were identified for the feminine gametes and five for the 111asculine gametes. KEY WORDS. Hoplia… Show more

“…5, where female GSI values are highly variable from November to January. This particular reproductive pattern of trahira has been reported by earlier studies (Paiva, 1974;Marques et al, 2001;Bialetzki et al, 2002;Rosso, 2007). The presence of those cohorts was validated by the agreement between the maximum number of observed rings and the number of unimodal components in the ring-frequency distribution.…”

“…This kind of population response (countergradient effect) has been found in other fish species (Conover, 1990;Conover & Present, 1990;Power & McKinley, 1997). At lower latitudes where temperature stays over the maximum value for food conversion by the species all the time, thus generating high metabolic rates and more continuous prey consumption, the reproductive season appears to extend from October to June (Barbieri, 1989;Marques et al, 2001) and is influenced by temperature and precipitation (Marques et al, 2001). In pampean lakes, spawning occurs only in the late spring and early summer, at the start of the favorable season for the species.…”

“…The cystic arrangement of the trahira testis was similar to that found in most teleosts (BILLARD 1986, MIURA 1999, GRIER & NEIDIG 2000 and its histology corresponded to the description given by MARQUES et al (2000). The seminiferous tubule arrangement is of the anastomosing lobular type (PARENTI & GRIER 2004) in which the germinal compartment does not end in the testis periphery but forms highly branched loops or tubules.…”

“…Other studies, conducted in different regions throughout South America, showed that the period of reproduction is variable for the species. Reproduction may occur during months of high rainfall in some sites (e.g., state of São Paulo, Brazil, Caramaschi & Godinho, 1982;Barbieri, 1989;Argentina, Matkovic & Pisanó, 1989b;Domanico et al 1993;central Amazonia, Brazil, Araújo-Lima & Bittencourt, 2001; State of Paraíba, Brazil, Marques et al, 2001), such as the data registered in this study for the south Pantanal, but also during periods of drought and lower temperatures in other regions (upper Paraná river floodplain, States of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, Bialetzki et al, 2002).…”
