A synopsis of the tribe Micrutalini Haupt (Homoptera, Membracidae, Smiliinae)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The tribe Micrutalini and its two genera, Trachytalis Fowler and Micrutalis Fowler, are redescribed. The following species are treated and, in some cases, nomenclatural changes introduced: Trachytalis isabellina Fowler, 1895; T distinguenda Fowler, 1895; T retrofasciata (Lethierry, 1890), comb.n.; Micrutalis atrovena Goding, 1930; M balteata (Fairmaire, 1846) = Acutalis lucidus Buckton, 1902, syn.n.; M bella Goding, 1929; M biguttula (Fairmaire, 1846) Haupt, 1929 (sensu DEITZ 1975 includes only… Show more

“…7A, 1) (Deitz 1975). Most of the recent comprehensive taxonomic research on Smiliinae has focused on the tribes Acutalini (Sakakibara 1997), Amastrini (Evangelista and Sakakibara 2007), Ceresini (Andrade 2004), Micrutalini (Sakakibara 1999), and Polyglyptini (Sakakibara 1996), although Cast (2002), in his Master's thesis, conducted a phylogenetic analysis of the Smiliinae using four mitochondrial genes.…”

“…Mistakes concerning localities of old specimen labels are apparently common in the Cicadellidae as noted by Schröder (1959) for Molomea biimpressa (Signoret), Mejdalani et al . (2000) for Amblyscartidia spinolai Mejdalani, Felix & Takiya, Young (1968) for Splonia acutalis Signoret, and Young (1977) for Sibovia sagata (Signoret), and in the Membracidae, as noted by Sakakibara (1999) for Micrutalis flavozonata (Fairmaire) and Micrutalis tripunctata (Fairmaire). Although it seems that specimens of the Signoret collection do not bear their original locality labels, it is apparently not a mistake of some later re‐labelling of the material, as the type locality in the original description of Tettigonia distincta is indeed given as Colombia.…”

“…R. & S." (Boraginaceae) in Trinidad. Sakakibara (1976) described two new species; Deitz (1983) referred one species to Rhexia Stål, and Sakakibara (1999b) provided a synopsis of Micrutalis, including 42 species. In the present study, nymphs and adults of two Micrutalis species were also collected on Cordia, one in Ecuador and another in Nicaragua (see Material Examined under Micrutalis).…”
