Reproductive aspects of Cyphocharax voga (Hensel) from Custódias Lagoon, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Characiformes, Curimatidae)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to analyse the reproductive period, fecundity and the size of the first gonadal maturation of Cyphocharax voga (Hensel, 1869) of Cust6dias Lagoon, state of Rio Grande do SuI, Brazil. The specimens (293 males and 247 females) were collected monthly, during the period between October 1994 and September 1995. The reproductive period took place from early winter until the end of spring. The average absolute fecundity was 36608 oocytes. The size of the first gonadal maturation wa… Show more

“…The high fecundity found in this study correspond to those reported in literature for other species of the family Curimatidae, which can vary from 4,380 to 100,130 oocytes (Nomura & Taveira, 1979;Romagosa et al, 1984;Hartz et al, 1994;Schifino et al, 1998;Sampaio & Sato, 2007), as well as the oocyte diameters, that ranges from 427 to 4,789 μm in high Paraná River basin fishes (Vazzoler, 1996). For many authors, fecundity and oocyte diameters do not necessarily depend on fish size, but on reproductive tactics (Vazzoler, 1996;Araujo, 2009;Casimiro et al, 2011).…”

“…This non-migratory species with no parental care reproduces at Três Marias reservoir, exhibiting an extended reproductive period (SATO et al2003). Other authors also reported that species of Curimatidae family are generally characterised by a long reproductive period (RODRIGUES et al 1989, HARTZ & BARBIERI 1994, SCHIFINO et al 1998. Probably due to the short rainy season, spawned females were captured at the Juramento reservoir during January/February/March only and, all females were found in resting in the following trimester.…”
