, the physiographic characteristics of the ichthyofauna of the estuary of Saco da Fazenda were studied in four defined areas representative of the estuary. A total of 4502 individuals were captured, with 42 species, 35 genera, and 21 families. Engraulidae were the most abundant fish, and Cetengraulis edentulus dominated the captures. The species of occasional occurrence prevailed in the samplings and were represented mainly by juvenile individuals. The highest abundances occurred during the months of summer and autumn, in contrast with high biomasses in the spring and autumn; area IV contributed the largest captures. The richness indexes, diversity, and equitability presented similar flotation patterns, with high values in spring and summer. The Jaccard index revealed a greater similarity in the composition of the ichthyofauna in areas II and IV, while the lowest happened between I and IV, which is probably due to the different sizes of these areas. This paper clearly shows the relevance of this estuary, albeit strongly impacted, for recruitment of small fish mainly during summer and autumn months.

ABSTRACT. Fish diversity in the UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara) reservoir, Paranapanema River, upper Rio Paraná basin, Brazil, and the importance of large tributaries in its maitenance. Fish samples were taken in four stretches along a gradient formed by the UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara) reservoir. The diversity of species was analyzed by the constance, index of Shannon-Wiener and similarity of the composition among stretches through the Jaccard's coefficient. The reservoir presents a richness of fishes composed by 67 species distributed in 5 orders; 47% of the species are constant, 15% are accessory and 28% are accidental. The highest values of Shannon-Wiener diversity and Jaccard's similarity were obtained in Cinzas and Tibagi, wich are the most distant points from the dam and which present large tributaries. The lowest values were found in Cruzália and Porecatu, which respectively correspond to the stretches with lotic and semi-lotic environmental characteristics. This work demonstrates the extreme importance of tributaries for the maintenance of species diversity in a reservoir, as a result of the preservation of the original characteristics of lotic systems in those river stretches and consequent reduction of the damming impact. RESUMO.As espécies foram coletadas em quatro trechos ao longo de um gradiente formado pelo reservatório UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara). A diversidade de espécies foi analisada pela constância, índice de Shannon-Wiener e similaridade da composição entre trechos através do coeficiente de Jaccard. O reservatório tem uma riqueza de peixes composta por 67 espécies incluídas em 5 ordens; 47% das espécies são constantes, 15 % são acessórias e 28% são acidentais. Os maiores índices de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener e similaridade de Jaccard foram obtidos em Cinzas e Tibagi, que são os trechos mais distantes da barragem e que apresentam grandes tributários. Os menores índices foram encontrados em Cruzália e Porecatu, os quais correspondem aos trechos com características, respectivamente, de ambientes lótico e semi-lótico. Este trabalho demonstra a extrema importância da presença dos tributários para a manutenção da diversidade das espécies em um reservatório, em função da preservação das características originais do sistema lótico naqueles trechos e conseqüente redução do impacto do represamento. SummaryThis study reports length-weight relationships for Apareiodon affinis, Leporinus obtusidens, Cynopotamus argenteus, Loricariichthys melanocheilus, Parapimelodus valenciennis, Iheringichthys labrosus, Rhinodoras dorbignyi and Pachyurus bonariensis. Specimens were collected between 2006 and 2007 from the lower section of the Uruguay River. The study represents the first reference on weight-length relationships for three species and also provides the new maximum size for three species. IntroductionLength-weight relationship parameters (a and b) are useful in fisheries science in many ways: to estimate weight of individual fish from its length, to calculate condition indices, to compare life history and morphology of populations belonging to different regions (Petrakis and Stergiou, 1995) and to study ontogenetic allometric changes (Teixeira de Mello et al., 2006).The aim of the study was to provide information on the length-weight relationships of eight commonly found fish species in three sites from the lower sector of the Uruguay River. Materials and methodsFishes used for the calculation of weight-length relationships were captured on four sampling dates between May 2006 and April 2007 in three sites from the lower section of Uruguay River. The sampling sites were settled considering a pulp mill location: one up-stream, Nuevo Berlı´n; other near the factory, Yaguarete; and the last one down-stream to the pulp mill, Las Can˜as.Fresh fishes were measured (to the nearest 0.1 cm standard length, S L ) and weighed (to the nearest 0.01g total weight, W T ). The parameters for the equation W T = aS L b (Ricker, 1973) were estimated by linear regression, after a logarithmic transformation of the variables. Voucher specimens were fixed in formalin (10%) and deposited in the Vertebrates Collection of the Facultad de Ciencias (institutional code ZVC-P). In order to check if fish growth was statistically different from isometric growth, a t-test (H 0 : b = 3), with a = 0.05 was performed; the same test was used to compare the slopes of this work with other data from the literature (H 0 : b 1 = b 2 , a = 0.05; Ricker, 1973Ricker, , 1975.
