Contracaecum australe n. sp. is described from the Neotropic cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus in Chile based on morphology and the sequence analyses of multiple loci, i.e., mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 2, mtDNA cox-2, the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosomal RNA gene, rrnS, and the ITS-1 and ITS-2 regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Moreover, sequence analysis of the same genes was carried out on the morphospecies Contracaecum chubutensis Garbin et al. (2008) from Phalacrocorax atriceps. Further, genetic relationships are presented between C. australe n. sp. and C. chubutensis with respect to the related congeners from fish-eating birds previously characterized genetically on the same genetic markers, i.e., Contracaecum rudolphii A, B, C, D, and E, Contracaecum septentrionale, Contracaecum microcephalum, Contracaecum bioccai, Contracaecum pelagicum, Contracaecum micropapillatum, Contracaecum gibsoni, and Contracaecum overstreeti. Several phylogenetic analyses (MP, NJ, and BI) inferred from mitochondrial genes (cox-2 , rrnS) were congruent in depicting C. australe n. sp. and C. chubutensis as forming distinct clades, highly supported, from the remainder of the Contracaecum taxa considered; thus, it validates their specific status. Further, analyses of the ITS-1 and ITS-2 sequence data of C. australe n. sp. and C. chubutensis supported their distinction with respect to the 2 sibling species, C. rudolphii D and C. rudolphii E, previously detected from Phalacrocoracidae of Australia. Morphological analysis and the differential diagnosis of male specimens of C. australe n. sp. enabled the detection of differences in a number of characters, including spicule length, peculiar shape of male tail, paracloacal papillae disposition, and shape and bifurcation depth of interlabia. According to the genetic and morphological results obtained, the erection of a new taxon from fish-eating birds of the Austral region is given and its formal description is presented. Phylogenetic trees support both C. australe n. sp. and C. chubutensis as being included in the same clade with the previously detected species from cormorants, i.e., C. rudolphii A, B, C, and C. septentrionale. The finding of C. australe n. sp. and C. chubutensis parasites of Ph. brasilianus and Ph. atriceps, respectively, appears to support a host-parasite association between the C. rudolphii A, B, and C, C. septentrionale, C. chubutensis, and C. australe n. sp. and different species of cormorants belonging to Phalacrocorax.

The Neotropic cormorant Nannopterum (Phalacrocorax) brasilianus (Suliformes: Phalacrocoracidae) is widely distributed in Central and South America. In Chile, information about parasites for this species is limited to helminths and nematodes, and little is known about other parasite groups. This study documents the parasitic fauna present in 80 Neotropic cormorants’ carcasses collected from 2001 to 2008 in Antofagasta, Biobío, and Ñuble regions. Birds were externally inspected for ectoparasites and necropsies were performed to examine digestive and respiratory organs in search of endoparasites. Ectoparasites collected were cleared and mounted for identification under a microscope. Fecal samples were also evaluated to determine the presence of protozoan parasites employing a flotation technique. A total of 44 (42.5%) of birds were infested with at least one ectoparasite species, while 77 (96.25%) were carrying endoparasites. No protozoan forms were found after examination. Most prevalent endoparasite species found were Contracaecum rudolphii s. l. (72/80, 90%), followed by Pectinopygus gyroceras (33/80, 41.25%), and Profilicollis altmani (26/80, 32.5%). This is the first report of P. altmani, Baruscapillaria carbonis, Avioserpens sp., Cyathostoma (Cyathostoma) phenisci, and Eidmaniella pelucida in the Neotropic cormorant. These findings also expand the distributional range of Andracantha phalacrocoracis, Paradilepis caballeroi, Hysteromorpha triloba, and P. gyroceras to Chile.

Los nemátodos Anisakidae tienen una amplia distribución mundial y sus ciclos de vida transcurren principalmente en hospedadores marinos (peces, cefalópodos, reptiles, aves piscívoras y mamíferos). El ciclo de vida generalmente involucra a invertebrados acuáticos como hospedadores intermediarios, peces como hospedadores intermediarios y/o paraténicos, y peces, reptiles, aves y mamíferos marinos como hospedadores definitivos. Hasta el momento, son escasos los antecedentes de investigación de Anisakidae en Argentina, lo cual alentó llevar a cabo las investigaciones del presente trabajo de tesis, para lo cual se planteó estudiar la taxonomía de los nematodos Anisakidae parásitos de aves marinas en Península Valdés, Chubut, Argentina. Las investigaciones se centralizaron en Península Valdés, aunque también se analizó material proveniente de Punta León y Bahía Bustamante (Chubut), Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires) y Cabo Vírgenes (Santa Cruz). Durante los años 2005 al 2008, se colectaron y examinaron un total de 161 ejemplares de Spheniscus magellanicus, 14 de Phalacrocorax atriceps albiventer, 12 de Phalacrocorax atriceps atriceps, 8 de Phalacrocorax brasilianus, 2 de Phalacrocorax magellanicus y 5 de Thalassarche melanophris.
