Development, survivorship, and reproduction of the tumid spider mite (Tetranychus tumidus Banks) on coconut palm were evaluated at 6 constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35°C). The developmental periods of immature stages ranged from 39.6 d at 15°C to 7.4 d at 30°C. The mite failed to develop beyond the larval stage at 10°C. The lower temperature developmental thresholds for egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and the combined immature stages were estimated at 11.1, 12.9, 12.1, 11.1, and 11.9°C, respectively. The upper temperature thresholds of 25.9-35.9°C for development of immature stages were determined from a nonlinear biophysical model. The percentages of survivorship of immature stages varied from 56.4 to 93.7% within 15-35°C. The average longevity of adult females ranged from 48.7 d at 15°C to 7.9 d at 35°C. The average oviposition per female lifespan varied from 86.02 to 61.75 eggs within the temperature range of 20-30°C. However, oviposition was greatly reduced to 19.44 and 20.54 eggs at 15°C and 35°C, respectively. The largest rm (0.289) and Ro (59.67) occurred at 30°C. Populations reared at 15 and 35°C had lower Ro values of 12.74 and 12.99, respectively. The lowest rm value (0.042) was recorded at 15°C. The mean generation time of the population ranged from 60.7 d at 15°C to 11.7 d at 35°C. It was evident that the development, survivorship and reproduction of T. tumidus were significantly affected by temperatures. ;The optimal temperature for T. tumidus population growth was 30°C.

This study was carried out to determine mite species on blackberry plants (Rubus spp. (Rosaceae)) in Florida and Georgia, USA, and differences in mite species between organic and conventional blackberry plantings in the area sampled. Surveys were conducted in organic and conventional commercial blackberry plantings from June to October 2016. Leaf samples were collected monthly from nine different blackberry cultivars including ‘Arapaho’, ‘Choctaw’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Kiowa’, ‘Natchez’, ‘Navaho’, ‘Osage’, ‘Ouachita’, and Von. Approximately 20 leaves per blackberry plant were taken. Twenty mite species (a total of 152 mite specimens) belonging to 7 families including Phytoseiidae (9 species), Ascidae (1), Cheyletidae (1), Erythraeidae (1), Stigmaeidae (1), Tetranychidae (4) and Tarsonemidae (3) were identified during the study. It was found that the abundance of predatory mites collected in organic farms was over 2-fold higher (105) than in conventional farms (47), which may be related to pesticide use on these commercial farms. Future surveys should provide a list of predatory species, which may hold potential for biological control of economically important pest mites.

A comprehensive taxonomic assessment of the most agriculturally important and highly diverse spider mite genus, Oligonychus Berlese (Acari: Tetranychidae) was performed. The sub-generic division, species groups, doubtful species, species complexes and the interpretation of a key generic character are discussed. Based on the orientation of the male aedeagus, only two subgenera, namely Oligonychus Berlese (aedeagus downturned) and Reckiella Tuttle & Baker (aedeagus upturned), are valid in the genus Oligonychus. The subgenera Homonychus Wainstein, Metatetranychoides Wainstein, and Wainsteiniella Tuttle & Baker are considered to be synonyms of the subgenus Oligonychus, whereas the subgenus Pritchardinychus Wainstein is proposed as a synonym of the subgenus Reckiella. Moreover, based on female morphological characters, four species groups (coffeae, exsiccator, iseilemae, and peruvianus) and 11 species subgroups (aceris, biharensis, coffeae, comptus, exsiccator, gossypii, iseilemae, peruvianus, pritchardi, smithi, and subnudus) are suggested in the subgenera Oligonychus and Reckiella. Fourteen Oligonychus species are proposed as species inquirendae, and potential cryptic species complexes in the genus Oligonychus are briefly highlighted. It is agreed that the clunal seta h1 is always absent, while the para-anal setae h2 and h3 are always present in the genus Oligonychus. A key to subgenera, species groups, and species subgroups of the genus Oligonychus is provided.
