A monarquia brasileira, estabelecida em pleno processo de independência das colônias americanas, precisava se afirmar diante do crescente movimento republicano que a rodeava não só através da criação de sua própria imagem, mas também das alegorias de seus inimigos. Partindo do projeto de monumento de Francisco de Azevedo Monteiro Caminhoá para comemorar a Guerra do Paraguai, cuja estátua central foi rejeitada pela Academia Imperial de Belas Artes, realizamos um estudo iconográfico e comparativo da corporificação de um Império masculino e, em contraposição, do monstro da tirania ou da anarquia como inimigos abstratos do Império, principalmente através de obras “menores”, mas de alta circulação.
