The objective of this study was to determine adequate conditions of water volume, seed quantity and immersion period to perform the electrical conductivity test, and to analyze the parameters of the accelerated aging test and its correlation with the the physiological potential of amaranth seeds. Five lots of amaranth seeds (Amaranthus cruentus), cultivar BRS Alegria, were used. The initial evaluation of the quality of these lots comprehended the following tests: water content, germination, first germination count, accelerated aging (traditional method, and modified versions, using unsaturated and saturated saline solution for the periods of 24, 48 and 72 h), electrical conductivity in different periods (2, 4, 6, 8 and 24 h), different quantities of water (25, 50 and 75 mL), different seed quantities (100 and 150), and field emergence. It could be concluded that the accelerated aging test at 41 °C, for 72 h, using unsaturated NaCl solution was efficient in the classification of amaranth seed lots in levels of vigor. The electrical conductivity test performed for 8 hours with 25 mL of water and 100 seeds was efficient in the classification of amaranth seeds as to their physiological potential.

RESUMOLeucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. (Fabaceae) é uma leguminosa arbórea indicada para a composição de sistemas agroflorestais e alimentação de animais em regiões de clima semiárido. Dada sua importância, objetivou-se com este estudo adequar a metodologia do teste de envelhecimento acelerado para avaliação do vigor das sementes. Para tanto, procederamse a execução de testes de envelhecimento acelerado à temperatura de 41 °C durante 0, 48, 72 e 96 h em lotes de sementes, com avaliação da porcentagem de germinação pós-envelhecimento e correlação simples com as variáveis germinação, primeira contagem, velocidade de germinação, condutividade elétrica e emergência de plântulas. Após 48 h de envelhecimento não foi constatada diferença na porcentagem de germinação das sementes dos lotes, e apenas o período de exposição de 96 h apresentou correlação significativa com o teste de emergência de plântulas. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado conduzido a 41 °C durante 96 h é eficiente para diferenciar lotes de sementes de L. leucocephala em níveis de vigor. Given its importance, the aim of this study was to adapt the methodology of the accelerated aging test to evaluate the vigor of L. leucocephala seeds. To this end, they proceeded to implementation of accelerated aging at 41 °C for 0, 48, 72 and 96 h in seed lots, with evaluation of the percentage of post aging germination and simple correlation with the variables germination, first count, speed of germination, electrical conductivity and seedling emergence. After 48 h of aging was no difference found on the percentage of germination of the lots, and only the 96 h exposure period showed a significant correlation with the seedling emergence test. The accelerated aging test conducted at 41 °C for 96 h is effective to differentiate lots of L. leucocephala seeds in vigor levels.

Celosia argentea L. and Celosia cristata L. are plants that are differentiated by the intensity and color of their flowering, and can be used as garden or cut-flower, with characteristic propagation by seeds produced in large quantities. The present study aimed to evaluate the physiological and sanitary quality of Celosia argentea and Celosia cristata seeds subjected to the accelerated aging test. The experiment was carried out in October 2016, using a completely randomized design, in a 2 × 6 factorial scheme (two temperatures: 41 and 45 oC and six periods of heat exposure: 0 (control), 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h), with four replicates of 50 seeds, for the two species of cockscomb (C. argentea and C. cristata). The seed lots of the two species of celosia are from the crops in the year 2012 and were stored in a cold chamber (15 oC and 40% RH), with an average moisture content of 11% and a mean germination of 98%. After the accelerated aging test, the physiological and sanitary qualities of the seeds of the two species of celosia were evaluated. We conclude that the accelerated aging proved to be effective for the evaluation of vigor, germination and emergence in the species field, when submitted to temperatures of 41 and 45 oC up to 120 h.
