Abstract: Low-sodium and high-potassium diets have been recommended as an adjunct to prevention and treatment of hypertension. Analysis of these nutrients in 24-h urine has been considered the reference method to estimate daily intake of these minerals. However, 24-h urine collection is difficult in epidemiological studies, since urine must be collected and stored in job environments. Therefore, strategies for shorter durations of urine collection at home have been proposed. We have previously reported that collecting u… Show more

“…The impact of salt consumption on blood pressure of the study participants was described in another publication 30 . It is possible to observe that the current consumption seems to be decreasing in relation to previous studies conducted in the same population of Vitória 10,27,28 . However, this finding should be carefully analyzed, because the method for urine collection was different in previous studies.…”

“…However, it is diffi cult to conduct this procedure considering the need to collect outside the household, sometimes in work places. Therefore, there have been eff orts to standardize more practical methods of collection 8,10,21 . The accuracy of these methods, however, has been questioned [21][22][23][24] , and that is why it is necessary to conduct validation studies in diff erent populations than that they were developed [11][12][13]25 .…”

“…However, salt consumption was estimated considering all sodium ingested as NaCl [15] because the 24-hour urinary sodium excretion can estimate 85-90% of dietary intake of sodium from all sources. In our report, urinary salt excretion was 6.95 g/day; however if the approximately 15% non-renal loss [16] were to be included, the overall salt intake would be 8.11 g/day.…”

“…In addition, in large epidemiological studies measuring urine produced over 24 h is challenging because specimens must be collected and stored during working periods. This collecting period may increase errors and therefore lead to inaccurate estimates (48) . As reported by Mente et al (11) , in the present study 24 h urinary K excretion was related to the consumption of vegetables, fruits and dairy products, as well as to their component HEI scores.…”
