Pattern of Wnt ligand expression during chick eye development

Abstract: The dorsoventral axis of the eye is determined prior to optic cup invagination. A variety of signaling pathways have been implicated in the maintenance of the optic dorsoventral axis, including, but not limited to, bone morphogenetic protein 4, Sonic Hedgehog and retinoic acid. Here, we investigated the possible contribution of Wnt ligands to the establishment or maintenance of the optic axis by analyzing their expression pattern during early chick optic development. We performed in situ hybridization of Wnt-1… Show more

“…These results point to the difficulty in studying Wnt ligands during development: they are often expressed in highly redundant, overlapping patterns. Other Wnts have been identified in the RPE of mouse and chick including Wnt5a and Wnt5b (Fokina and Frolova, 2006; Rossi et al, 2007; Van Raay and Vetter, 2004). Further work is necessary to identify other members of the Wnt family that are expressed in the RPE and their individual contributions to D-V retinal patterning.…”

“…The Wnt signalling pathway directs dorsal cell fate decisions during embryonic development (reviewed by Klaus and Birchmeier, 2008). Therefore, we next studied the expression patterns of various Wnt family members, such as Wnt2b, Wnt3a and Wnt8b (see also GarciaLopez et al, 2004;Rossi et al, 2007;Quinlan et al, 2009;Van Raay and Vetter, 2004). Of the analysed Wnt ligands, only Wnt2b transcripts were restricted to the dorsal surface ectoderm and dorsal ov at the time the RPE is specified (Fig.…”

“…Multiple lines of evidence implicate several Frizzled family members, including FZD 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, and 10, in mediating Wnt signaling in the dorsal spinal cord; however, the role of FZD10 requires clarification (Borello et al, 1999;Bourhis et al, 2010;Cauthen et al, 2001;Chesnutt et al, 2004;Deardorff et al, 2001;Fokina and Frolova, 2006;Garcia-Morales et al, 2009;Hollyday et al, 1995;Kawakami et al, 2000a;McCabe et al, 2007;Nunnally and Parr, 2004;Paxton et al, 2010;Rossi et al, 2007;Stenman et al, 2008;Summerhurst et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2006;Yan et al, 2009;Yu et al, 2010). Previous reports suggest that FZD10 synergizes with WNT1, but not WNT3A, in an axis duplication assay in Xenopus (Garcia- Morales et al, 2009).…”
