Abstract: It has been reported that mental stress causes abnormality of spermiogram parameters. We investigated the effect of psychological stress on the L-arginine-nitric oxide (NO) pathway. Semen samples were collected from 29 healthy fourth semester medical students just before (stress) and 3 months after (non-stress) the final examinations. Psychological stress was measured by the State Anxiety Inventory questionnaire. After standard semen analysis, arginase activity and NO concentration were measured spectrophotome… Show more

“…This disruption results in the rise of the precursor androgen, androstenedione, a drop of the product T, and lower average values of semen volume, sperm concentration, and sperm cell motility (45). Eskiocak et al has shown other stress-related changes in seminal plasma, specifically, a marked rise in nitric oxide and a decrease in arginase activity resulting in poorer semen quality under stress (16). Moreover, in animals, induced psychological stress negatively affects T and LH levels, sexual behavior, and semen parameters (1,49).…”

“…In addition, the availability of a wide range of different tools to assess stress and other psychological conditions makes comparison across studies difficult. Some studies examined the relationships between different types of stress and/or anxiety and semen quality (9,12,14,(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21), while others have looked at semen quality in relation to psychosocial personality factors and stress coping styles (10,13,15,22). Several studies reported an association between higher stress levels and decreased semen…”

“…Analyses of the semen of medical students during examination periods 10,11 and of men who have experienced times of war, [12][13][14] periods of stress at work 15 and a recent bereavement 16 have shown reduced sperm concentration and alterations in other sperm para meters. However, other studies contradict these investigations.…”

“…However, other studies contradict these investigations. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16] According to Hjolland and colleagues, 17 the effect of a man's everyday psychological stress on semen quality is small or nonexistent. They observed, for the first time, that there was no association between job strain and any semen character istic or sexual hormones in 399 Danish couples trying to conceive.…”
