Abstract: Glutathione is the major intracellular antioxidant thiol protecting mammalian cells against oxidative stress induced by oxygen-and nitrogen-derived reactive species. In trypanosomes and leishmanias, trypanothione plays a central role in parasite protection against mammalian host defence systems by recycling trypanothione disulphide by the enzyme trypanothione reductase. Although Kinetoplastida parasites lack glutathione reductase, they maintain significant levels of glutathione. The aim of this study was to us… Show more

“…With significant increases of ·OH and H 2 O 2 levels and lipid peroxidation, the antioxidant system of testis was significantly disturbed, and at the same time the antioxidant GSH, enzymatic antioxidants SOD and GSH-Px were also significantly inhibited. The antioxidant GSH functions as a direct reactive free-radical scavenger (Romão et al, 2006). SOD and GSH-Px are two main components of antioxidant enzymes.…”

“…Previous studies have suggested that superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide are the main source of nicotineinduced free radical production depleting the cellular antioxidants (Kalpana and Menon, 2004). Glutathione is a crucial component of the antioxidant defense mechanism and it functions as a direct reactive free radical scavenger (Romao et al, 2006). The liver is the major organ with the highest content of GSH, which it supplies to lung and kidney by distinct GSH transport system (Husain et al, 2001).…”

“…[pArg] L. mexicana could reflect the combined effects of 1) enhanced iNOS activity due to increased availability of arginine, 2) lower levels of trypanothione in the absence of arginase-derived spermidine, making the parasite more vulnerable to NO ⅐ -mediated toxicity; 3) enhanced development of cells producing the type 1 cytokine IFN-␥; and 4) decreased endogenous parasite polyamines (51).…”
