Frequency of CCR5delta32 in Brazilian populations

Abstract: A sample of 103 randomly chosen healthy individuals from Alegrete, RS, Brazil, was tested for the CCR5∆32 allele, which is known to influence susceptibility to HIV-1 infection. The CCR5∆32 allele was identified by PCR amplification using specific primers flanking the region of deletion, followed by electrophoresis on a 3% agarose gel. The data obtained were compared to those reported for other populations and interpreted in terms of Brazilian history. The individuals studied came from a highly admixed populati… Show more

“…The CCR5-∆32 allele has been found in Brazilian populations in frequencies between 2.2-6.8% (Munerato et al 2003, Vargas et al 2006, Reiche et al 2008, Rigatto et al 2008. Here, we found a frequency of 2.4%.…”

“…The Brazilian population presents a complex genetic background, characterised by a high degree of miscegenation (Callegari-Jacques et al 2003, Pena 2005. In major Brazilian cities, CCR5-∆32 was found at frequencies of between 2-7% (Munerato et al 2003, Vargas et al 2006, Reiche et al 2008, Rigato et al 2008, CCR5-59029A between 39-44% (Rigato et al 2008), CCR2-64I at approximately 10% (Munerato et al 2003, Rigato et al 2008) and SDF1-3'A between 18-22% (Reiche et al 2006, Rigato et al 2008. Despite the moderate rates of HIV infection reported in Brazil, little is known about the influence of genetic polymorphisms on HIV disease progression in this population.…”

“…These reports demonstrated a CCR5/ D32 frequency of 6.8% among white individuals, 3.8% among blacks, and 6.4% among brown individuals in HC from the city of Alegrete, Rio Grande do Sul. 35 One study investigating serodiscordant couples showed a frequency of approximately 9.0% of CCR5/D32 in HESN, 11.0% in HIV-seropositive asymptomatic people, and 6.0% among HIV-seropositive people with AIDS. In addition, approximately 0.06% of the D32/D32 genotype was observed among HESN, HC, and HIV-seropositive asymptomatic people, and less than 0.03% of the D32/D32 genotype was detected among HIV-seropositive people with AIDS 2 .…”

“…The prevalence of CCR5-∆32 was investigated in a random sample of healthy individuals from alegrete, in southern Brazil, where the population was basically established from a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese and African individuals and native Amerindians. No CCR5-∆32 homozygous genotype was detected and the presence of the ccr5 wild-type genotype among whites, blacks and mulattos was 14.0, 8.0 and 13.0%, respectively, indicating a CCR5-∆32 allele frequency of 0.068, 0.038 and 0.064, respectively (113).…”

“…Brazilians represent one of the most genetically heterogeneous population in the world, the result of five centuries of interethnic crosses between people from three continents including the european colonizers, represented mainly by Portuguese; african slaves (mainly from West-central africa); and the native amerindians (113,114). the present Brazilian population includes europeans from southern europe (Portuguese and italian) and middle easterners, asians, arabians, africans and native amerindians (115)(116)(117).…”
