Abstract: The objective of the present study was to examine whether hypothyroidism affects the reproductive system of adult female rats by evaluating ovarian morphology, uterus weight and the changes in serum and pituitary concentrations of prolactin and gonadotropins. Three-monthold female rats were divided into three groups: control (N = 10), hypothyroid (N = 10), treated with 0.05% 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) in drinking water for 60 days, and T 4 -treated group (N = 10), receiving daily sc injections of L-thyroxine … Show more

“…Thirty-five (42.5%) patients had normal periods and remaining 45 (57.5%) patients had different menstrual irregularities suggesting that menstrual abnormalities do occur in hypothyroidism. Dominant menstrual abnormalities found in our study in hypothyroid patients were menorrhagia, oligomenorrhoea, as reported in other studies [2,3].Unique feature of our study was that we divided patients into two groups, subclinical hypothyroidism and overt hypothyroidism. In both groups the dominant menstrual abnormality was oligomenorrhoea followed by menorrhagia.…”

“…Adult female rats, made hypothyroid, also reportedly have irregular estrous cycles and ovarian atrophy [57]. PTU treated hypothyroid animals also have been shown to have irregular cycles leading towards diestrous [58]. Thus changes in the estrous cycle observed in the study are consistent with those seen in hypothyroid conditions and substantiates the role of BS as a potent goitrogen.…”

“…In hypothyroidism condition , gonadotropin (FSH and LH) production is not interfere by the pituitary, 31 while it is known that FSH is a major trigger of aromatase activity. 32 Hypothyroidism can inhibit the growth and development of the follicles, but the follicles are still able to produce steroid hormones.…”
