Biology and clinical utilization of mesenchymal progenitor cells

Abstract: Within the complex cellular arrangement found in the bone marrow stroma there exists a subset of nonhematopoietic cells referred to as mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPC). These cells can be expanded ex vivo and induced, either in vitro or in vivo, to terminally differentiate into at least seven types of cells: osteocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, tenocytes, myotubes, astrocytes and hematopoietic-supporting stroma. This broad multipotentiality, the feasibility to obtain MPC from bone marrow, cord and periphera… Show more

“…Bone marrow (BM) contains a special population of stem cells able to support hematopoiesis and to differentiate into different cell lines (adipogenic, osteogenic, chondrogenic, myogenic, and cardiomyogenic lines) (1,2). These cells were first described in 1974 by Friedenstein et al (3), who characterized them as fibroblastic stem cells capable of forming colonies (fibroblast colonyforming units, CFU-F).…”

“…Owing to this ability, MSCs are of great potential in the context of tissue engineering and cell-based therapy. 10 Recently, our laboratory isolated a cell population from human fetal bone marrow, which were Flk1 þ CD31 À CD34 À and could differentiate into a lot of cell lineages in vitro and in vivo. [11][12][13] We also isolated similar MSCs from murine dermis and expanded them for about 30 passages.…”
