Abstract: This paper presents performance indicators for the Brazilian cancer, cardiovascular and malaria research areas from 1981 to 1995. The data show an increasing number of papers since 1981 and author numbers indicate a continuous growth of the scientific community and suggest an expected impact of scientific activity on biomedical education. The data also characterize cardiovascular research as a well-established area and cancer research as a faster growing consolidating field. The 1989-1994 share of Brazilian ar… Show more

“…To our knowledge, however, there have been no previous studies on Brazilian abstracts presented at AUA Annual Meetings. We and others have shown an increasing Brazilian contribution in the areas of cardiology, neurology, oncology, and psychiatry, among others (10)(11)(12)(13). In the current study, we attempted to quantify the scientific output from Brazil in recent editions of the AUA Meetings.…”

“…5 In a recent analysis, we showed that among grant holders with scientific production at the CNPq in the area of medicine, the field of Hematology/Oncology corresponds to 7% of researchers. 6 In an extensive comparative analysis of scientific production in three major areas, Rodrigues et al 7 showed that Oncology is a field with a growing trend to consolidate itself as an important area in science and technology in Brazil. However, systematic analyses by researchers in the area of Hematology/Oncology remain scarce.…”

“…Most of the affected area on the other hand is sub-Saharan Africa. Rodriguez, Fonseca, and Chaimovich (2000) in their article on 'Mapping Cancer, Cardiovascular and Malaria Research in Brazil' pointed out that there is a decrease in the output of malaria research; it is about 0.89%; further, they mentioned that malaria research (about 468 articles) is more evenly distributed across the country, following the pattern of the endemic distribution of disease. Fialho and Srinivas (2004) studied malaria-related research output in two countries, Brazil and India, countries with most advanced science and pharmaceutical capabilities in the developing world.…”
