Immunocytochemistry of the mucilage cells of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Araucariaceae)

Abstract: -(Immunocytochemistry of the mucilage cells of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Araucariaceae)). The use of monoclonal antibodies for specific pectic epitopes is an important tool in the study of the cell wall. Throughout the development of mucilage cells of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, a gradient of distribution was observed in relation to the pectic de-esterification, as well as to the increase of galactan and arabinan epitope distribution, and to the reduction of arabinogalactans protein… Show more

“…Usually, it is used to study mucilage secreted by plant seeds. Mucilage is composed of complex acidic or neutral polysaccharide polymers of high molecular weight, mostly methyl-esterified HG [25] , rhamnogalacturonan I, and low amount of galactans and arabinans [26] . Ruthenium red was also successfully used to study amount of galacturonic acid (GalA) in carrot callus [27] .…”

“…Mucilage comprises a family of highly branched, polymerized carbohydrates including l -arabinose, d -galactose, l -rhamnose, d -xylose, and galacturonic acid in various proportions that may also contain glycoproteins and other compounds such as tannins [ 17 ]. While we found mucilage inside the cytoplasm of cells of a specialized type of parenchyma in Ephedra , mucilage is only found outside the cell or in specialized cells known as idioblasts in angiosperms [ 18 20 ]. Our analysis was not able to detect the type and location of the pigment/s responsible for the red color at later developmental stages.…”

“…myrtoides . The AGPs seem to be markers of the secretory cells identity, as they were also detected in the mucilage cells of Araucaria angustifolia [ 68 ], in the secretory ducts of galls on B . reticularia [ 13 ].…”
