Abstract: -(Spatial variation of tree community structure in a fragment of tropical semideciduous forest in Piedade do Rio Grande, Minas Gerais State, Brazil). A survey of the tree community, topography and soils of a fragment of tropical semideciduous forest was carried out with the objective of assessing alleged correlations between the variations in community structure and species composition and variations in edge effect and soil water regime and chemical fertility. The fragment (30 ha of area) is situated at 21°29'… Show more

“…The H' values reported here were intermediate in terms of published results from other forest fragments for the same region (Alto Rio Grande) without reported fires (Botrel, Filho, Rodrigues, & Curi, 2002;Nunes, Mendonça, Filho, Botezelli, & Machado, 2003;Dalanesi, Filho, & Fontes, 2004;Guilherme, Filho, Appolinário, & Bearzoti, 2004;Carvalho, Filho, Fontes, & Curi, 2007). As such, the numerical analyses of the H' variable was not useful to characterize the consequences of the event of fire or alterations resulting from regeneration processes, and could only be characterized based on the spatial analyses of the data.…”

“…The mean basal area and mean height were lower at the forest edge than in the forest interior, illustrating how edge effects may disrupt the forest structure of fragmented landscapes (also see Laurance et al 1998Laurance et al , 2002Harper et al 2005;Carvalho et al 2007). Our results on the tree density of the forest edge and interior are not consistent with some previous findings for tropical forests; others have reported the tree density at the edge generally exceeds that in the interior (Williams-Linera 1990;Murcia 1995).…”

“…Therefore, forest interiors contain significantly more large trees and, thus, greater basal areas, which are indicators of lower vegetation disturbance Laurance et al 1998Laurance et al , 2000Laurance et al , 2007Carvalho et al 2007). Similarly, the mean height of the trees in the interior was 2.1 m higher than the mean height of the trees at the edge.…”
