“…It appears likely that although there is a two‐dimensional geographic overlap with Haemosporidia, ecological or physiological barriers are present that prevent transmission and maintenance of haemosporidian infection in black cockatoos. The presence of haemosporidians infecting psittacines in South America at a prevalence of up to 1.3% in some species suggests an ecological barrier to transmission, rather than physiological incompetence for haemosporidian infection in this order of birds . Little corella ( Cacatua sanguinea ) have been reported to be infected with Plasmodium in Australia, demonstrating the ability of haemosporidian infection to also occur in Australian psittacines.…”
