The meat of Neo-tropical fauna is savoured in parts of the Caribbean, Central and South America. Dasyprocta species is one animal hunted for its meat and this activity may eventually threaten their survival. However, efforts made to domesticate these wild animals lead to the development of farming systems. Reproduction has been a valuable tool in the process of domestication. Therefore, part of this effort included research directed at understanding the reproductive attributes of the male agouti. Electro-ejaculation was used to collect semen from Dasyprocta leporina and Dasyprocta azarae. This mini review compared three electro-ejaculation protocols developed for Dasyprocta species in Brazil and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. These procedures were applied after the animals were anaesthetized. Collected ejaculates that contained spermatozoa were expressed as percentages of the total number of ejaculated collected and used as a measure of the effectiveness for the respective three Protocols. The most effective was Protocol 3 (100%). However, this was achieved with the administering of 5 different anaesthetics which may cause some potential damage to the agouti. Conversely, 75% successes were obtained then Xylazine 20mg/ kg (Protocol 1, T4) and Ketamine 20mg/kg and Xylazine 40mg/kg (Protocol 2, T8) were administered, respectively. The ejaculate with the largest concentration of spermatozoa (431±180×10 6 /ml) were collected for Protocol 1, T4. Furthermore, no such specifics were listed for ejaculates collected from Protocol 3. In conclusion, the three Protocols should be reviewed to develop a procedure which utilizes resources efficiently and produces results that are quantitatively and qualitatively desirable.

RESUMO.-[Anatomia óssea e radiográfica do membro pélvico do cervo-do-pantanal (Blastocerus dichotomus).] O conhecimento das estruturas anatômicas encontradas nos animais silvestres é importante para a prática da clínica médica e cirúrgica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a osteologia e anatomia radiográfica do fêmur, patela, tíbia, fíbula, tarsais, metatarsais e falanges do cervo--do-pantanal, para contribuir com o cotidiano clínico e, a identificação da espécie. A maioria das estruturas foi semelhante às encontradas nos animais domésticos, com particularidades próprias da espécie. Destaca-se, por exemplo, a ausência do terceiro trocanter do fêmur. Embora seja um ruminante, o cervo-do-pantanal apresentou a fíbula semelhante à descrita para os equinos. Este animal possui quatro dedos em cada membro, formados por três falanges, sendo que apenas o terceiro e o quarto dedos tocam o solo e, o segundo e o quinto dedos são rudimentares. Apresentou ainda quatro ossos sesamóides proximais e dois distais. Não se observou ossos sesamóides junto ao músculo gastrocnêmio.TERMOS DE INDEXAÇÃO: Cervo-do-pantanal, Blastocerus dichotomus, coxa, perna, animais silvestres, anatomia. INTRODUCTIONThe Marshdeer is a ruminant that belongs to the family Cervidae included on the currently eight species of deer found in Brazil (Barbanti Duarte 2008, Barbanti Duarte et al. 2012). This species is considered the largest deer from South America, and the males can weigh up to 130 kg (Pinder & Grosse 1991) The knowledge of anatomical structures found in wild animals is important for the practice of medical and surgical clinic. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe the osteology and radiographic anatomy of the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsal, metatarsal and phalanges of the Marshdeer Blastocerus dichotomus as a reference for clinical use and species identification. Most structures were similar to those found in domestic animals, with special features of this species. Noteworthy is, for example, the absence of the third trochanter of the femur. Although a ruminant, the Marshdeer has a fibuyla similar to the one described for the horse. B. dichotomus has four fingers on each limb, formed through three phalanges, only the third and fourth finger touch the ground, and the second and fifth finger is rudimentary. It has four proximal and two distal sesamoid bones, and sesamoid bones near the gastrocnemius muscle do not exist.

Resumo: Este artigo apresenta relatos de sete distintas patologias de origem reprodutiva ainda não descritas em cutias (Dasyprocta aguti Linnaeus, 1758) fêmeas, que afetaram a fertilidade ou resultaram na morte do animal. Descreveu-se a natureza, a localização e a frequência das alterações patológicas macroscópicas e histológicas dos órgãos que compõem o sistema reprodutivo de cutias fêmeas, criadas sob condições de cativeiro no semiárido do Brasil. Foram avaliados através do exame anatomopatológico o aparelho reprodutivo de trinta e nove cutias mortas naturalmente e encaminhadas ao Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária, no período de fevereiro de 2010 a maio de 2015. Destas, constatou-se alterações patológicas no sistema reprodutivo de 10 (25,6 %). No total, 13 alterações foram observadas, sendo que, em alguns animais haviam a coexistência de mais de uma alteração. Assim, as alterações patológicas encontradas foram: endometrite (n=4; 30,8%), piometra (n=3; 23%), retenção de placenta (n=2; 15,4%), maceração fetal (n=1; 7,7%), mumificação fetal (n=1; 7,7%), parto distócico (n=1; 7,7%) e ovários afuncionais (n=1; 7,7%).
